Producer - Game Rules Manager
At Wizards of the Coast, we connect people around the world through play and imagination. From our genre defining games like Magic: The Gathering® and Dungeons & Dragons® to our growing multiverse, we continue to innovate and build new ways to foster friendship and connection. That’s where you come in!
The Magic TCG Studio is responsible for building the entire Magic TCG experience -- the card, game, and product design; the worldbuilding and art; the editing and packaging; and much of the production and logistics -- all developed here within the studio.
Our Game Design team touches cards from beginning to end to ensure we’re making successful products, play formats, and experiences. This includes assisting with card design, mechanic design, format design, product exploration, and more.
As the Magic Rules Manager, you'll draw on your Magic expertise and ability to envision everything the game was, is, and can be. The Magic rules are the backbone of the game. You will be the studio’s leading Magic rules specialist, playing a meaningful role as our design teams bring their visions to fruition.
Part technical writer, part game designer, and part advisor, this role is unlike any other job. You understand the intricate underpinnings of the rules and use that understanding to guide its expansion. Collaboration is paramount. Players delight in reading new Magic cards, and you have a key voice in what words await them!
What You'll Do
- Review tomorrow’s Magic cards today. Take in what the future holds and offer observations to make it even greater.
- Engage with design and digital teams. Support constant innovation, answering questions about how cards work and how they could work differently.
- Educate our players. Write and update official documents that keep our players in the know.
- Safeguard Magic’s past and its future. Maintain the Oracle database and ensure cards from Magic’s 27-year history (and counting) match the language we’re using today.
- Play Magic! Keep your rules knowledge sharp and spot future pitfalls by playtesting future products and offering feedback to build the game.
What You'll Bring
- 3+ years of experience in technical writing, game rules writing, or similar in a professional setting
- Extensive expertise on the Magic Comprehensive Rules and card templates, demonstrated via judging Magic tournaments or similar community leadership roles.
- A proven ability to present technical material in plain language that’s easy to understand.
- Familiarity with Game Design in general and all of Magic’s platforms and formats.
- Positive, engaging, and clear communication between teams and with our community to improve our shared vision.
- Flexible, adaptable, and creative, with a constant appetite for knowledge. Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Self-motivated curiosity, active listening, and a diverse toolbox of leadership skills.
- Compassion, empathy, and a deep understanding of people.
In the Wizards TCG Studio, we believe diversity of experience is fundamental to creating broadly accessible and fun gaming experiences for *all* of our players. We encourage everyone to consider being a part of our team.
