We are looking for a Principal Technical Artist to join our growing team on a full-time basis. Your job will be to bridge the gap between the issues of the art, design, and programming teams in game development. You must understand the fundamentals of real-time graphics, modeling, animation, and VFX, and be able to assist with the production and integration of art assets at the highest quality.
This position is open to remote work for the right candidate, and relocation to our office in Galway, Ireland is also possible.
Responsibilities
- Communicating and coordinating with the art, programming, and design teams
- Setting up workflows and pipelines for art production
- Supporting artists and engineers in the 3D art pipeline
- Assisting in asset optimization and validation
- Solving complex technical art production issues during development
- Enforcing standards as outlined by heads of departments
- Monitoring the performance of the game
- Maintaining technical documentation
Skills required
- Deep knowledge of art and animation pipelines, including the use of tools such as Maya, 3DS Max, Substance, etc.
- Expert understanding of optimization techniques and the technical requirements of game content - draw calls, polycounts, shader complexity, memory usage, etc.
- Experience developing art-driven solutions for visual gameplay features, eg. destruction simulation, procedural VFX, etc.
- Solid understanding of the real-time rendering and post-processing pipelines, and the techniques for optimizing runtime performance
- Experience mentoring and leading other artists to produce their best work in a supportive environment
- High attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills
- Familiarity with game systems and the game development process
- High level artistic skills - proportion, color, composition
- Creative mindset and ability to overcome technical challenges
- Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with differences between creative and technical teams
Preferences
- A strong portfolio or demo reel
- Experience with Unreal Engine, including understanding of or experience with Nanite & Lumen
- Experience with procedural workflows and tools such as Houdini
- Experience working on a First Person Shooter
- Understanding of rigging and animation
- Shader & material development experience
- Experience with programming and/or scripting languages used to create the scripts/tools necesssary for accelerating and optimizing art production workflows
