Narrative Writer & Editor, Pokémon GO

The Niantic team is looking for a versatile narrative-focused writer and editor to help us create new stories within the Pokémon GO universe. You’ll work with our larger narrative team to craft new characters, design new missions, and build narrative arcs.
The ideal person has a passion for the franchise and a deep understanding of the Pokémon universe. They’ve mastered the rules of grammar, and they’re confident and capable of developing their own written work (as well as the work of others). Pokémon GO’s narrative is delivered across a wide range of communication mediums, so the ability to craft blogs, in-game dialog, plotlines, emails, FAQs, video scripts, and other public-facing marketing materials is a requirement.
The narrative designer should possess a strong sense of organization, professionalism, and attention to detail, as they will be partnering with internal and external colleagues to develop high-profile content which will reach millions of people around the world. In addition, self-motivation and time management is critical as this role will need to quickly switch between projects and hit critical deadlines.
Responsibilities
- Work with the Pokémon GO development team, The Pokémon Company, and the rest of the narrative team to create plotlines, story arcs, and narrative beats to support the in-game experience and marketing campaigns.
- Write, edit, and polish a wide variety of communications, including blogs, in-game dialog, emails, FAQs, video scripts, and other public-facing marketing materials for Pokémon Go.
- Lead content approval and publishing processes with partners and outside vendors at the campaign level.
- Establish, maintain, and develop brand glossaries for all of our supported languages.
- Collaborate with the community management, events, social media, product marketing, and public relations teams to develop and maintain messaging best practices and style guides.
- Assist in other copywriting needs (marketing blogs, social media copy, reactive messaging, crisis communication, etc.).
- Help maintain consistency and cohesion across Pokémon GO’s characters, narrative voice, and editorial content.
- Review and report on content performance and modify strategy accordingly.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Screenwriting, Marketing, or related field.
- A minimum of 4 years experience narrative writing, editing, and publishing under regular deadlines, preferably in the gaming industry.
- Deep, demonstrated ability to write, edit, revise, and rewrite text-based content.
- Experience with the Chicago Manual of Style.
- Proven ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment within an iterative editorial process.
- Strategic problem solver with strong leadership, management, and communication skills.
- Familiarity with editorial processes and project management.
- Able to make critical decisions under time constraints and a full workload.
- Experience working at a startup or game developer is a plus.
- A passionate gamer; with familiarity and knowledge of Pokémon GO.
