We are looking for a Gameplay Engineer experienced in modern AAA narrative solutions to drive narrative system innovations in the Unreal Engine. This role will build runtime systems that weave together text and audio from multiple languages into the world to create immersive gameplay and tell compelling stories. You will also work together with tools engineers, audio engineers, writers, and designers to create friction-free workflows for storytelling, and pipelines for text and voice in multiple languages.

As an experienced Unreal developer, you will share your knowledge with both veteran and junior teammates to guide them in learning best practices, gotchas, tips and tricks with the Unreal Engine. You will be a resource to them for questions, architectural advice, and general help where needed.

If you are excited to be a force multiplier for a team of incredibly talented developers, removing the barriers that stand between an idea and an implementation, helping them to learn the Unreal Engine, and to build upon your knowledge of narrative systems to enable innovative new methods of storytelling, this is the role for you!

About Our Team

The Engineering team at ArenaNet thrives on a wide array of perspectives, experiences, and interests. We know that the best creations come from healthy and friendly teams. Our work is woven together with the efforts of other disciplines and crafts within game development. We seek out voices and ideas that might be new to us. We are always on the lookout for ways to help each other, both within the Engineering team, and throughout the studio as a whole.

Who We Are Looking For

You, our ideal candidate, are experienced with modern AAA narrative solutions in UE4 and excited about how to leverage what’s new in UE5. You have a good working knowledge of game content tools, asset pipelines, and the text localization process. You understand performance costs of gameplay systems and how to diagnose, debug, and optimize them. You are skilled at debugging not only code, but entire human-driven processes. You can identify bottlenecks and pain points in workflows, develop solutions, and gather customer feedback for continuous improvement of our tools and systems.

Listening and communication skills is, at this point in your career, natural to you. You use your strong listening skills to understand design goals and can creatively synthesize solutions for those goals based on your experience and the capabilities of the engine. You use your strong communication skills to present those options in a way that makes sense to designers and the rest of the team.

Mentoring and teaching are activities that you take pleasure in as part of your day-to-day endeavors. You enjoy evangelizing best practices based on your experience with Unreal and respectfully guiding and mentoring teammates to fish at your level with the engine.

You are at home working together with non-technical colleagues to develop good practices, technical constraints, and team standards. You are always endeavoring to improve processes, tools, and workflows to maintain the quality and stability of the work produced across disciplines in a fast-paced environment.

We are open to remote work in AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, ID, IL, MA, MD, NC, NV, NY OR, TX, UT and WA or onsite/hybrid/flex at our office in Bellevue, WA.
