Material Artist

Ascendant Studios is looking for a Material Artist with expert knowledge of Substance Designer and Painter to create photoreal textures and materials that will define the look of our experiences. You will help build out a library of materials that will be used by all art disciplines, collaborating with each department to bring our worlds and characters to life with best-in-class visuals. This position relies on both artistic excellence and technical skill to create content that is both polished and optimized, including shaders in Unreal, trim textures and atlases, Smart Materials for Painter, and maintaining the material library and custom tools within Designer.
This is a full time position. We are all currently working remotely due to Covid-19, but once we return the position may either be based in our office in San Rafael, CA, or remain fully remote.
Key Responsibilities
- Create stunning physically-based textures and materials
- Collaborate closely with art discipline leads under the guidance of the Art Director to develop our material library
- Work with artists and designers to understand the content needs of their levels and how those fit into the larger library
- Proactively research new techniques and workflows to create better environments more efficiently
- Documenting material workflows for both in-house and external artists
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience as a Material or Environment Artist in games
- Expert knowledge of PBR workflows, Substance Designer, Substance Painter, Photoshop, and Zbrush
- Familiarity with Unreal or similar node-based engines
- Strong traditional art fundamentals
- Able to quickly implement changes based on creative feedback
- Ability to work independently, problem solve on the fly, and collaborate efficiently across disciplines in a small, fast moving team
Good to Have
- Photogrammetry and scan data experience in material workflows
- Strong modeling skills in 3ds Max and/or Maya
- Experience with Houdini
- Experience working on a First Person Shooter
- Passion for learning and growing your skills
