Machine Shop Manager

Job Description
We are looking for an experienced lab manager to support the delivery of first class Augmented Reality products. In this role you will take ownership of multiple labs such as machine shops, robotics labs, and motion capture labs. You will also be a go to person for hands on work such as mechanical design, fabrication, and machining. You will work alongside mechanical engineers, software engineers, perception researchers, and others at Magic Leap to help deliver high quality, scalable data for our perception products.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and service machine shop equipment including 3D printers, laser cutter, waterjet, etc.
- Maintain / organize / upgrade labs, including robot and motion capture equipment
- Maintain and develop a cluster of custom hardware to support software development
- Support HW infrastructure needs including truss installation, networking and cable management, etc.
- Support labs using Purchasing software tools
- Be a go to person for solving prototyping needs for Sunnyvale site
- Review test equipment specs with engineers, work with vendors to get quotes, and file PO’s.
- Set up and tear down test stations and test racks as necessary.
- Provide test equipment needs and forecasts for budget planning.
- Perform lab asset management duties (storage, transportation, calibration, service, and audit) and maintain the equipment database.
- Maintain compliance with lab certifications and local requirements.
- Work with facilities / architects to ensure safety (CAL OSHA), regulatory, and quality requirements are met.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience running a professional lab including CNC machine shop setup, management, and maintenance.
- Experience procuring and keeping inventory of electronic/mechanical parts, tools, and laboratory consumables.
- Hands-on experience with lab equipment including signal generator, oscilloscope, power supply, logic analyzer, etc.
- Hands-on experience with prototyping equipment including 3D printer, laser cutter, waterjet, CNC, etc.
- Familiarity with machining strategies and working with aerospace-grade materials
- Flexibility and comfort working in a quickly changing environment
- Meticulous organizational skills
- Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience designing and assembling test fixtures and jigs
- Experience with CAD software such as Solidworks
- Ability to gain or posses current Hazardous Waste certifications
Pluses
- Experience with motion capture systems such as Optitrack or Vicon
- Experience in AR/VR or computer vision
- Experience working with site facilities teams on large scale projects
- Experience working with robotic systems
