Every year, Gearbox develops and publishes amazing games with passionate fan bases. We believe that patching our products and supporting them long after launch is good for our fans, good for our developers, and good for our business. We have existing AAA projects like Borderlands 3 and Wonderlands that we continue to support. We have a slate of upcoming unannounced titles and self-published titles. That's a lot of patching, hot fixing, live events, and content drops to plan for as we grow towards the future. We are building a new team to focus exclusively on this challenge and are looking for a Live Design Director to join as a key founder of this team. They will be the champion for the best player experience when our games go live and are supported over time. The Live Design Director will work with multiple project directors and leads to help make sure each project is set up to succeed when they go live. They'll help train teams on best practices, design live event systems while games are still in production, and work with directors and producers on those projects to plan for the future. The ideal candidate has design and leadership experience, and is passionate about these challenges. They should be comfortable with hiring, training, and managing their teams in a way that promotes a healthy work-life balance. Most of all they should have a passion for our games and a desire to entertain the world.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with multiple existing and future project teams to document and teach best practices for launching and supporting games.
  • Working with project Creative Directors to design and implement the systems and content needed to support live events, hotfixes, and patching.
  • Help prepare different projects for the process of patching their games after launch.
  • Serve as hiring manager for Designers on the Live team, helping hire, onboard, and mentor them.
  • Coordinating with studio production to ensure Live content can be created efficiently and consistently while avoiding crunch and burnout.
  • Work closely with internal focus testing, community management, streamers, and other sources of player feedback to understand what the user base enjoys and desires for future content or live events

Qualifications:

  • Have a portfolio that documents your contributions to 3 or more shipped games, with at least one of those titles in a relevant position design leadership position
  • A proven track record of systems design, live content design, and/or monetization design.
  • Fluency with analytics, knowledge of the business side of the gaming industry, and a familiarity with industry leaders in terms of live game support
  • Excellent documentation, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to maintain focus and self-motivation towards the current project goals.
  • Live near or be able to relocate to Frisco, Texas, or work full time remotely in an agreed upon location.

Bonus Points For:

  • Knowledge of GaaS best practices and industry trends
  • Experience leading design teams in a live environment
  • Proven experience defining KPIs and designing initiatives that measurably achieved them.
  • Prior AAA shipping experience with Unreal 4 or 5 technology
