Level Designer
Avalanche Studios is the division dedicated to ambitious, externally published, AAA open world games like Just Cause, Mad Max, and Rage 2 - our upcoming title Contraband is a co-op smuggler’s paradise set in the fictional world of 1970s Bayan.
Contraband is a brand new IP published by Xbox Game Studios, and we're now looking for a talented Level Designer to join our team.
The Position
As an Experienced Level Designer, you will own the design, implementation, and finalizing of locations and content in the world; everything from location geometry and their surrounding terrain and materials, to detailed geometry passes like combat and traversal spaces, and basic gameplay scripting.
Your role is akin to a compositor or storyteller, to take art, design, and code and construct immersive, engaging, and interactive open worlds that look as good as they play. You will work closely with other teams to realize the vision of the game, acting as a conduit to facilitate the needs of the many interacting systems such as Audio, VFX & AI that overlap with level design. Design is highly collaborative and negotiation and pitching of content is part of the job.
Required Qualifications
- 1 to 3 years of games industry experience, ideally having worked on an open-world title as a level or world designer
- An excellent understanding of open-world systems, and how systemic and scripted systems function in sandbox environments.
- A solid understanding of the MDA framework and how to analyze your work and the work of others
- Be able to utilize constructive feedback and/or data effectively to iterate and balance systems.
- Highly proficient with 3D level building tools.
Desired Qualifications
- A great sense of level design fundamentals, technical know-how, and functional problem-solving to deliver clear, readable, and fun open-world levels with great flow, pacing, and gameplay.
- A strong aesthetic sense and keen attention to detail.
- The ability to work closely with other departments, with an understanding of dependencies and associated workflows to collaborate on overlapping systems.
- Self-motivated in setting and reaching goals while able to produce results as part of a team.
- The ability to communicate ideas and requirements clearly to stakeholders.
- Experience with various game engines, editors, and their workflows.
- Passion for making and playing games.
