Legal Counsel

An experienced and highly commercial Legal Counsel is sought to assist with legal matters for one of the UK’s largest independent game development and publishing companies.
Founded in 2005 and privately owned, Mediatonic are a development team of more than 200 people across 4 principal studios; with premises in London, Madrid, Stockholm and Tokyo and blue-chip partners throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Our dedicated Publishing organisation invests in independent developers all over the world.
The first person to join our Group in a dedicated legal capacity, this role will be based in our London headquarters and will join a fast growing organisation, reporting to our CFO.
Areas of activity will include...
Development Studios
A commercial negotiator, you will work closely with our Business Development and Finance teams, propelling and guiding the negotiation of complex development agreements with the world’s largest game publishers.
- Work with Blockbuster IPs such as Gears of War, Temple Run, Harry Potter to name just a few recent collaborations.
- Track, evaluate and report on progress as complex agreements move through our pipeline.
- Prioritise which work should be undertaken in-house and that which would be best served by external counsel.
- Support our vendor network who provide additional resources and skills to our studios via a Master Service Agreement framework and bespoke deal-making assistance.
- Enter into distribution agreements for our Group’s own IP with major platform holders such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo as well as into licensing, regional rights and merchandising arrangements with partners around the world.
- Encourage awareness of legal matters within the teams, ensuring that the teams operate good legal practices consistent with our partner agreements and in accordance with the quality and scale of Intellectual Properties under development.
Publishing
- Support our standalone Publishing organisation which works with third-party developers around the world in signing new games, licensing, distribution and acquisition of exciting new intellectual properties.
- Develop best practices and contractual frameworks to support and nature smaller developers based all over the world as the business expands.
- Assist our newly founded Japan office in developing framework agreements for publishing and distribution in the region, working with specialist external counsel.
Corporate
- Work closely across functions including executives, development studios and commercial teams, to advise on legal, regulatory and compliance issues across a broad range of contracts, agreements and intellectual property matters.
- Review our trademark, invention and design right protections and ensure that these are appropriately invested in and planned for.
- Research and analyse legal issues, in particular keeping abreast of new and changing laws affecting the games industry.
- Review content of games and marketing materials for copyright, trademark, publicity or any other issues.
- Qualified lawyer with multiple years’ industry or relevant practice experience with IP

Highly Valued
- In-house post qualification experience within an entertainment/IP based or media company
- Strong familiarity with trends in the video game/entertainment industries across platforms
- Experience working closely with or in Business Development
- Wider knowledge of employment, privacy and data protection legal matters
- Experience of Chinese and Japanese cultural practices, laws and/or languages appreciated
