Job Summary:
We are looking for a self-motivated and enthusiastic lawyer to join our growing Legal team at Jagex as Legal Counsel – Data Protection.
Reporting to the Head of Legal, this role will be working across all areas of the diverse and demanding legal games world. The main focus of the role will be on data protection and privacy matters however you will also be responsible for key commercial and technology projects both in the UK and globally including intellectual property, licensing, commercial relationships and contracts and litigation.

Main Duties, Responsibilities & Requirements
- Provide strategic and practical advice to the business on data protection, privacy, commercial / IP, corporate and regulatory matters.
- Review and draft game specific and other commercial contracts and support the business in negotiating these contracts to a conclusion – to include data protection addendums and data sharing agreements.
- Assist on corporate transactions including liaising with external solicitors on merger & acquisition transactions and corporate compliance, advising the Head of Legal on all relevant matters – in particular, data protection and privacy aspects.
- Help manage a diverse portfolio of trademarks and shape the business brand strategy for our evolving living games world.
- Liaise with external bodies and internal stakeholders on new developments in Gaming and Gambling which will impact the business, providing tools and advice to navigate the exciting and constantly evolving games landscape.
- Devise, develop and implement policies, practices and procedures to drive the improvement of the legal function within Jagex and ensure overall business compliance, with an emphasis on privacy, data protection and security elements.
- Responsible for managing the data protection authority communication
- Responsible for the maintenance of data mapping throughout the business, recording of data processing activities and assisting with data subject access requests
- Prepare standard and ad-hoc information and data reports to regulators and other stakeholders as required.
- Prepare and manage on a regular basis appropriate timely management information on Legal risk and regulatory issues to the Head of Legal including suggested mitigating actions.
- Assist with preparing advice/ad-hoc reports and presentations for the board and/or senior management on topical subjects.
Qualifications & Experience
- Honours degree (or equivalent) and qualification in law / current practising certificate
- Qualified solicitor from either a leading private practice law firm or in-house – currently practising would be advantageous
- Ideally, you will have 3-5 years PQE related experience (though other levels of qualification will be considered), with a data protection and privacy specialism, preferably with some in-house experience (any games industry experience an added bonus but is not required for this role).
- Experience investigating and working with others to advise on security and personal data breaches, complaints and ICO investigations.
- A good understanding of data protection and confidentiality legal and regulatory frameworks and best practice, with experience of applying this in a technology and data driven environment
- You will be accustomed to working on a broad mixture of commercial contracts in the games/software or other creative/entertainment sectors with excellent drafting, interpersonal and communication skills.
