Summary:
As Age of Learning continues scaling our work to provide effective digital learning products for children, our four-person Legal Department is expanding to serve the growing needs of a dynamic, mission-driven technology company.
We are seeking an outstanding and versatile attorney to serve as Counsel with a focus on commercial contracts. This role is a critical part of the Legal team, focusing on strategic contract negotiations and drafting in the U.S. and internationally across our direct-to-consumer and school businesses.
You will work on a diverse array of legal contracts, policies, and programs, including supporting key business partnerships and sales to schools and school districts, focusing on privacy and data security. You will also serve as a trusted partner across company departments, helping efficiently and effectively address a wide range of business needs.
Responsibilities:
- Draft, manage and negotiate a variety of complex inbound and outbound company contracts emphasizing licensing, SaaS-based technology, and distribution and partnership agreements.
- Draft, review, and negotiate sales agreements with schools and school districts, and support the Schools sales team in responding to RFPs and data privacy agreements, and other legal inquiries
- Ability to develop strong relationships, deliver quality communications to the sales team, and operate as a business partner to close deals.
- Collaborate with the legal and business teams to evolve the commercial legal function by identifying opportunities to centralize knowledge and creating scalable processes to increase visibility and expedite communication, alignment, and execution
- Navigating general privacy laws (including GDPR and CCPA) and security issues in a commercial negotiation context, as well as laws related to children and education such as FERPA and COPPA
- Collaborate with other teams to contribute and implement best practices to manage risk and foster growth throughout the organization
- Serve as a key point of contact to provide legal support for all departments within the organization
- Assist with developing and implementing programs and processes, including a new Contracts Lifecycle Management (CLM) solution, that is right-sized for the growing organization and provide for scalability
Required Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate and admission to State Bar in good standing
- 5+ years of proven legal experience within law firms and in-house legal departments
- Highly motivated and detail-oriented individual, with the ability to proactively own and organize a substantial workload and demonstrate excellent analytical abilities
- Experience working with cross-functional teams
- Ability to identify and analyze complex issues and devise creative solutions and strategies for resolution
- Superior interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to relate comfortably at all levels with internal and external stakeholders
- Experience developing processes for the commercial function, including creating and maintaining playbooks, contract templates, and self-help workflows.
- Significant experience in:
- Commercial law: Drafting and negotiating contracts, including strategic partnership agreements, with the ability to solve problems effectively and efficiently in a business-friendly manner and fast-paced environment
- Navigating privacy laws (including GDPR and CCPA) and security issues in a commercial negotiation context.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in consumer e-commerce or for a fast-growing technology company
- Experience in children’s privacy issues
- Experience implementing or working with a CLM solution
