That’s No Moon is an independent AAA game development studio established in 2021 by veterans of some of the most recognizable and critically acclaimed creative teams in the world, including Naughty Dog, Infinity Ward, Santa Monica Studio, Bungie, PlayStation, and more. A remote-friendly studio with a central office and performance capture stage located in Los Angeles, That’s No Moon is creating the next generation of narrative-driven, genre-defining experiences built upon a culture of creativity, collaboration, responsible production practices, and individual empowerment. We are looking for a Lead Virtual Production Technician ready to make ground-breaking innovations for a AAA title. The Expert Virtual Production Technician can expect to be involved in all aspects of the daily operation of the Mocap stage. Grounded, believable animations are pivotal to our game, and in this role, you will work with the Virtual Production Director and members of the animation team to build cutting edge virtual production animation that will empower the game team to deliver a great narrative.
Responsibilities:
- Leads the setup of the stage and capture system up for real-time capture in Unreal, using the Lightstorm system, in collaboration with the Virtual Production Director
- Trains the team and supervises work coming out of the Lightstorm and Giant capture system
- Supervises the set ups, calibrations, operation or does maintenance on the mocap system and the related on-stage hardware and software.
- Help the Virtual Production Director oversee the daily prep of the studio, software and systems prior to the shoots.
- Prepare the solving setups and calibrate the actors daily
- As needed, process data, or motion edit, after the shoot has wrapped, in Nuance or Motionbuilder.
- May be asked to work on prop or set fabrication and construction, including 3D printing of custom props for use on set
- May be asked to operate the motion capture system during shoots
- As needed, gets real-time scenes ready for use in Unreal and Motionbuilder, prior or during the shoots.
- May help get real-time connections going between Motionbuilder or Unreal
- May help with Facial or hand Capture as the need arises
- Will help create and strike bespoke mocap structures during the mocap shoot
- Will ensure that all the data from the stage is backed up and batch processed after the shoot
- Ensures that timecode synch is maintained between all the various software and hardware on stage.
- Ensure the recording of mocap and camera data for each take stays in synch with the slate names and production
- Helps be responsible for the maintenance of all markers in use on stage (passive or active), tracking objects, actors and sets
- Works with the camera operators to ensure that tracking objects, Fiz loggers or other encoders are properly attached, calibrated and are generating quality real-time data
- Helps calibrate lenses and coordinate camera offset and lens calibration during lens changes.
Requirements & Skills:
- 3-5 years of Motion Capture experience
- 3-5 years of DCC experience (maya, max, blender)
- Lightstorm experience
- 2+ years of Film, TV or video game production experience
- Adept at Motion Capture setup, marker sets, and skeleton solving setup creation
- Familiar with Linux and Windows
- Excellent troubleshooting skills. Must be able to diagnose and solve issues with the software and hardware in use on the mocap stage
- Must be able to execute technically difficult work and maintain a good attitude under the pressure of on-set production
- Must be able to work long hours as needed to prepare the stage prior to the shoots and to wrap it once the shoot has wrapped.
- Able to help direct the layout of motion capture cameras and make adjustments in response to conditions on set.
- Ensure quality real-time camera, character and prop tracking data
Qualities:
- Scripting experience a plus
- Motionbuilder experience
- Unreal 4 familiarity
- Shows a desire to innovate and improve efficiency
- Fabrication skills for production and maintenance of tracking objects preferred
- Familiarity with video hardware and signals preferred
- Must be detail oriented highly organized and able to handle a variety of tasks in an efficient manner
