Lead VFX Artist

Obsidian Entertainment is looking for a talented and self-motivated Lead VFX Artist to join the team making our next world-class RPG.
The Lead VFX Artist position requires experience with particle editing, texture creation, and real-time material with a creative mindset and a technical background. This Lead VFX Artist will need be able to conceptualize, present, and execute ideas within a schedule, while participating in technical and artistic problem solving.
This position requires the ability to work onsite or in a hybrid capacity at the Obsidian Entertainment office in Irvine, CA.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the success of the VFX department through mentorship, feedback, planning of tasks, and organization of features
- Create all aspects of in-game VFX including character, weapon, environment, and destructive events
- Work closely with project leadership to ensure the VFX team is addressing the artistic and functional needs of the content for which they are responsible
- Evaluate and initiate processes and features needed to improve and streamline production
- Define and maintain VFX pipelines and practices to streamline the creation of assets that meet visual quality targets within performance limitations
Requirements
- Experience with real-time particle editing in Unreal Engine
- Excellent technical and artistic problem-solving skills
- Fluent knowledge in a 3D content creation package (Maya, 3ds Max, etc.)
- Mastery of Photoshop or comparable program
Pluses
- 3+ years of game industry experience in real-time FX and at least one shipped title with a credit as a VFX artist
- Experience with Unreal Engine's Niagara particle system and blueprint management.
- Shader creation experience
- Animation experience
- Environment art experience
Portfolio Requirements
- A web portfolio that demonstrates a proficiency in real time particle creation
Portfolio Pluses
- Any samples showing 3D modeling abilities
- Any pre-rendered VFX work
