The World of Warcraft team is seeking a Lead Technical Designer to join the Technical Design team. In this role, you will build and support collaborative connections with the rest of the team, manage and guide the development of technical designers, and help the team establish technical vision and processes. The ideal candidate prioritizes collaboration and service to partner teams, understands technical design, and wants everyone on their team to have the best job on Earth.

A technical designer on WoW straddles the line between design and engineering to provide both technical and creative support to the game’s content and workflows. They are passionate about building systems and tools that make creating maintainable, WoW-quality content easier, and they understand the underlying systems upon which the game is built. They work with members of the design and engineering teams to plan and execute projects including content creation, building and maintaining designer tools, content reviews, and large-scale data changes. They are also always looking for opportunities to share knowledge and best practices with the entire design team. They are committed to learning, have a collaborative attitude, and are always asking “how can we make making WoW better?”

What you will do…

• Manage, mentor, and evaluate a team of technical designers
• Work with production and other leads to manage the Technical Design schedule and backlog
• Champion work / life balance for the Technical Design team
• Serve as a sounding board for the technical design of World of Warcraft content
• Maintain collaborative connections with Design, Art, Audio, QA, Production, and Engineering
• Serve as an active partner in the Design and Engineering teams’ leadership groups
• Work with the Design team to identify workflow inefficiencies and collaborate with the Engineering team to evaluate potential solutions and prioritize requests
• Maintain familiarity with the game’s design
• Promote, contribute to, and participate in our culture of inclusion and diversity

To succeed, you must have…

• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Experience performing in a senior technical design, design, or engineering role or equivalent

• Experience leading projects or teams

• Experience in the design and architecture of game systems
• Understanding of game editors and tools
• Understanding of current World of Warcraft gameplay and systems
