Lead Opto-Mechanical Engineer
Company Description
Magic Leap is an eclectic group of visionaries, rocket scientists, wizards, and gurus from the fields of film, robotics, visualization, software, computing, games and user experience.
We are growing quickly, and this is the time to get on board and play a role in shaping the way people will be interacting with the world tomorrow.
Job Description
This role requires a subject area expert in opto-mechanical engineering to guide novel opto-mechanical design in a cross-functional team. In this role, the candidate with collaboratively brainstorm the development of new concepts for components, subs-systems and full products. Specifically, the engineer will develop, design, and prototype complex opto-mechanical wearable display system including light sources, spatial light modulators, optics, sensors, and electronics. In this effort, the engineer will create solid-model designs for cross-functional review. This engineer will also coordinate fabrication of prototypes and complete detailed design work on optical mounting fixtures to facilitate system demonstration.
Responsibilities
- Create models and detailed drawing packages for a wide variety of mounts and fixtures
- Design and oversee fabrication of custom fixtures for laboratory demonstrations of complex optical components and sub-systems
- Work with key optical design engineers and perform tolerance analysis on mounting and alignment accuracy
- Interface with outside resources for fabrication of custom parts and fixtures
- Design and develop full opto-mechanical tolerance analysis for assembly and alignment of complex optical systems involving light sources, lenses, spatial light modulators, custom eyepieces, sensors, frames
- Perform trade-off analysis using finite-element modeling tools for various materials for properties such as thermal dissipation, coefficient of thermal expansion matching, cost vs. performance
Qualifications
- 10 -15 years of experience designing and developing cutting-edge optical products, preferably for display markets
- Experience rapidly prototyping (mounts, optics, test beds), proof-of-concept test beds
- Experience and knowledge of kinematic mounting principles and practices
- Deep experience with SolidWorks CAD package or equivalent
- Expert level in opto-mechanical error budgeting / uncertainty analysis
- Knowledge of basic ray-based optical design principles
- Familiar with optical CAD packages such as Zemax, Code V, FRED
Education
- BS, MS, or PhD in Opto-Mechanical or Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics or the equivalent. Advanced degrees can be counted as 3 years of experience each
