Job Description
Magic Leap is seeking a Lead Material Scientist with a focus on polymers and adhesives to support product development, applied research, and manufacturing. Materials scientist works on development and selecting of new polymers as well as evaluate their behavior under different conditions using a range of scientific instruments. The results of these tests are used to improve the performance of existing products, to eliminate faults with materials already in use, and to help with the development of new technologies. We are looking for candidates who are motivated, creative, and dedicated team players who excel in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must have a strong technical background and rigorous approach to problem solving, be highly innovative, and able to communicate and collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities:
- Guide material selection and implementation for product and manufacturing process development
- Conduct research into the structures and properties of polymeric materials, especially thermoset resins and adhesives in order to obtain information that could be used to develop new products or enhance existing ones. Identify optimal cure and processing conditions and aid implementation in HVM (High Volume Manufacturing)
- Experience with a broad range of thermo-mechanical test methods for polymer characterization for product-relevant material properties, especially material stiffness, damping, and coefficient of thermal expansion.
- Devise testing methods to evaluate the effects of various environments (processing, humidity, mechanical stress, etc.) on materials.
- Analyze product failures to identify root causes and design implications, with focus on polymers, composite and adhesives failures
- Develop improved testing procedures and use of equipment.
- Analyze and resolve, or assist technicians in solving work problems.
- Assist in diagnosing issues for test instrumentation to provide accurate test data for engineers.
- Collaborate with engineers and scientists from other disciplines, such as mechanical, electronic or optical engineering.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a Material Science, Chemical Engineering or related field +5 years of related work experience or PhD degree with 2+ years.
- Deep knowledge of thermoset polymers and their structure property relationship.
- Strong background on radiation polymerization is preferred.
- Broad experience with polymer synthesis and processing.
- Expertise in material characterization methodologies such as DMA, TMA, Instron, Rheometer, TGA and DSC
- Analyze and communicate materials data in a clear, organized manner and make recommendations that allow for informed decision making
- Good foundation in descriptive and inferential statistics with knowledge and experience in experimental design
- Problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Capable of working on multiple tasks and projects.
- Highly detail oriented and self-motivated.
- Applicant must have good basic laboratory skills related to consistent experiment methodology and safety.
Education:
- Master’s degree in a Material science, chemical engineering or related field +4 years of related work experience or PhD degree with +2 years.
