We're Studio Wildcard, developers of the smash indie hit ARK: Survival Evolved -- one of the most popular and original video games in recent years. We're expanding and updating many of the ARK community's most beloved features while taking full advantage of the latest tools and technologies. And now we're searching for an exceptionally talented and passionate Lead Technical Lighting Artist with Unreal Engine 5 experience who can create high-impact work for the expanding ARK franchise.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining artistic visual consistency with a strongly defined aesthetic on-brand for the game
  • Create the exterior and interior lighting within the world with a focus on the time of day
  • Create and manage lighting tools used within the environment and tweak shaders/material and textures to improve the perception of the lighting
  • Working alongside the Technical Art Director and Art Director, along with core programming teams to anticipate and solve technical challenges, as well as achieve inspiring and breathtaking results
  • Work with art teams to maintain consistent and physically accurate materials across all departments
  • Participating as a supervising team member in determining various design solutions; improving efficiency and providing artistic feedback on a per-shot and sequence level to other team members
  • Primary support agent for the content team members; support for all core production lighting tasks from pre-production to final polish
  • Collaborating with Art Director, Technical Director, and other leads to guide artists’ overall professional development, providing performance feedback, mentoring, and assisting with resolving performance issues
  • Ensuring that all lighting deliverables are completed fully and in line with the production schedule

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience either in a leadership role on AAA games or the CGI or in a VFX film industry
  • 5-7 years of proven industry experience in Games or Film in generating final lighting/rendering
  • Expert skills with real-time lighting tools and pipelines in Unreal Engine 5
  • Strong technical and artistic understanding of Lumen, global illumination, physical lighting, real-time reflections, dynamic shadows, volumetric atmospherics, luminance, and color theory
  • Technical experience with managing lighting memory, optimization, and performance budgets in Unreal Engine
  • Working closely with other departments while creating and implementing assets
  • Being self-driven to be able to produce quality lighting setup and solve performance challenges within the runtime constraints
  • Strong communication skills and a positive team-player attitude
  • Experience in creating or managing a dynamic time-of-day system in a AAA game

Pluses:

  • Inspired by the development of next-generation lighting pipelines, tools, and workflows
  • Deep understanding of CG lighting technology, both real-time and offline rendering
  • Multiple shipped game titles on various platforms
  • Shader or material creation experience
  • Experience with Unreal Blueprints
  • Familiarity with ARK: Survival Evolved

The expected annual base pay range(s) for this position vary based on a variety of factors, which include: (but aren't limited to) skills, competencies, qualifications, knowledge, and experience. Each pay range is only relevant to those residing in WA state and can vary based on geographical location.
