The Lead 3D Artist’s job is to oversee and follow the art team’s work and quality specific to the 3D & 2D creation of props, environment assets, vehicles, pickups, and other similar 3D content.

They care about the quality, performance, technical pioneering, and how assets are properly created via 3D modeling & texturing.

Upholding the vision & goals defined by the Directors, Designers, and Level Artists while also having direct creative input and planning in that collaboration.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Art Directors, Lead Level Artists, Level Artists & Game Designers for definition of art asset needs and expectations
  • Ensure 3D & 2D art assets maintain quality, excitement, and originality as it relates to other triple-A games, Gearbox’s’ own desires, and Project vision
  • Lead, motivate, and serve as a 3D technical and creative resource for the art team, assisting in the resolution of art asset planning, issues, design, function, and performance
  • Maintain art content aesthetic consistency & creativity from beginning to end of a project
  • Detect significant problems and find the best “artistic/technical/organizational” compromise
  • Create a fun & inspirational environment while coaching artists by providing reviews, growth plans, and generally assisting in their skillsets
  • Ensure art assets are created based on concept or reference to the visual standards of the project
  • R&D new techniques, tools, and technology to best serve Project needs and keeping the art team at Gearbox at the forefront of innovation

Requirements:

  • Must have a wealth of 3D modeling, and texturing experience.
  • Fill in the creative blanks and help realize the Art Directors and Projects aesthetic & creative intent by working with the concept team, providing misc. forms of reference, and harnessing your imagination
  • Match art needs with the proper artists playing to their skillsets, desires, and interests
  • Relay and follow through with Art Director & other teams’ feedback to the art team
  • Collaborate with the FX & Tech Art teams to define art content specs and ensuring proper implementation & performance
  • Work with the other art leads on a regular basis to effectively manage art asset direction, modeling, texturing, lighting, FX, optimization, proper implementation, and debugging to meet the aesthetic, stylistic, and technical quality bars
  • Provide regular feedback to content artists verbally, via JIRA, through email, or other visual presentation (such as paint overs, additional concept art, reference, tweaked geometry, etc)
