Lead 3D Character Artist

Survios currently has an opening for a talented Lead 3D Character Artist to help visualize the future of immersive gaming on a variety of unannounced titles.
The ideal candidate enjoys putting their skills and knowledge to use in a variety of styles. Your broader experience in game development and the character pipeline will help you work collaboratively with designers, concept artists, technical artists and animators to create an immersive and epic game experience.
Responsibilities:
- Create a diverse range of high-quality AAA character assets, working closely with the Art Director and Art team to refine visual targets for new models and materials.
- Support prototyping efforts with Art, Tech Art, and Design by creating low-resolution R&D assets for rigging/animation testing and look development.
- Support and advise the Creative Director and Art Director to ensure their vision makes it into the game.
- Partner with Tech Art and Engineering throughout development to ensure assets are functionally sound and optimized for engine/platform constraints.
- Explore opportunities to technically innovate, streamline tools and processes, and champion best practices for the team.
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to the Character team to ensure assets are stylistically cohesive and hit the artistic and technical quality bars established.
- Maintain the Character team's scope of work by delegating tasks, planning estimates, and updating as needed to ensure individuals' workloads are manageable and the team's deliverables can be completed on schedule.
- Proactively engage with leadership and peers across departments to align on high-level priorities and maintain strong lines of communication.
- Work with key stakeholders to develop scalable next-gen character pipelines for internal staff and external outsourcing partners.
- Engage in technical and aesthetic problem solving efforts through to completion.
- Be proactive about elevating your team's concerns to the larger team and making sure that your discipline is well represented.
- Help continue to expand the capabilities of the Character Art team through training, team building, refinements of process and techniques, and candidate recruiting and hiring.
- Work closely with external teams in creating and reviewing outsource packages going out, as well as, ensuring incoming work is technically sound and meets technical standards.
Requirements:
- An accomplished artist with 6+ years experience within the character art discipline with 2+ years experience as a Lead Character Artist in AAA game development using UE4+.
- Expert knowledge of anatomy, form, silhouette design, and detail hierarchy.
- Exceptional sculpting and poly modeling skills for generating organic and hard surface character assets.
- Comprehensive knowledge of multiple major 3D and 2D packages (3DS Max or Maya, Zbrush, Photoshop, and Substance) and techniques for Characters, Creatures, and Costuming.
- Demonstrated experience creating PBR textures and a strong understanding of the PBR texturing workflow.
- Experience in utilizing scan data in the character pipeline.
- Deep technical knowledge of modern pipelines, workflows, and techniques for developing AAA characters with clean topology.
- Passionate about mentoring others to further develop their artistic and technical skill sets and are excited about managing, leading, and continuing to grow a world-class character art team.
- Excellent organization, time management, and communication skills.
- Self-driven and team focused with the ability to collaboratively and independently problem solve and drive solutions through to completion.
- A proactive drive to explore cutting-edge technologies and techniques for character development, and an interest in adapting new workflows and processes.
- Receptive and welcoming towards direction, constructive critique, and new ideas.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of self-direction while balancing multiple tasks at once.
- Comfortable giving feedback to both internal teams and external partners.
Pluses:
- Experienced with blendshape creation a plus.
- Experience rigging or skinning a plus.
