Summary:
The responsibility of the Language Specialist is to help create, advise on and review content (interactive, audio, video, print) offered in their target language, and serve as the voice of users engaged with our localized content. This role requires specific linguistic and cultural expertise, as well as technical expertise in both the processes of localization/globalization and interactive software development life cycles. Functions include reviewing product designs for usability in their target language, reviewing translations done by translation agencies, doing lower-volume translations into their target language, testing and reviewing localized products and assets across desktop browsers, Android, and iOS platforms. It also includes a review of translations/layouts within common document formats (Word/PDF/etc.) along with audio and video content.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as editor/reviewer of translations submitted by vendors, as well as a primary translator on some lower-volume requests
- Edit and evolve the Age of Learning globalization style guide for their target language, and ensure consistent adherence to it
- Update approved translations on the translations management database, including global search and replace actions
- Monitor and serve recording sessions in the target language, including reviewing scripts ahead of recording to add notes for the studio director and voice talent, and assisting the effort to review script changes that may be suggested by the studio team at the time of recording
- Assist with casting decisions for voice talent in the target language
- Review proposed product designs against the knowledge of the target language audience
- Review localized site content, including learning activities, animations, and documents, from the end-user perspective, to ensure that quality conforms to localization standards and product guidelines
- Detect linguistic errors, layout bugs, text overlaps, concatenation problems, disparities with source English, contextual inaccuracies, grammatical mismatches, etc.
Required Qualifications:
- Previous experience in translation/language services, and/or as an LQA (Localization QA) tester
- Native capabilities in the target language, with the ability to put oneself into the shoes of being a parent, a student, or a teacher in the target language/culture
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Ability to effectively manage time, multitask, and remain self-motivated
- Exceptional communication abilities in both their target language and English
- Understanding of educational processes in the market of the target language, to be able to identify areas where concepts may not translate over as intended
- Experience working with at least one translation management platform (Smartling, Trados, Memsource, XTM Cloud, Transifex, etc.)
- Experience working with at least one project management and/or bug tracking software suite (Jira, Asana, Basecamp, Trello, Backlog, etc.)
- Well versed in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with and knowledge of software development life cycle
- Experience working with multiple translation management platforms (Smartling, Trados, Memsource, XTM Cloud, Transifex, memoQ, etc.)
- Experience working with multiple project management and/or bug-tracking software suites (Jira, Asana, Basecamp, Trello, Backlog, memoQ, etc.)
- A Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, Foreign Languages, Information Systems or Education
- Lived in the market of target language within the past 10 years, or otherwise frequently engaged with the market via travel, professional circles, etc.
- Understanding of basic HTML and primary file formats used in localization (JSON, CSV, XML, etc.)
