Technical Director - Frontier Foundry

We have achieved serial successes across a wide variety of titles including Elite Dangerous , Planet Coaster , Jurassic World Evolution and Planet Zoo . We are continuing to grow our team to support our existing portfolio and an exciting and ambitious future roadmap, which includes the development of both own-IP titles and licensed-IP titles. Our IP-license partners include Universal (Jurassic World), Formula 1 and Games Workshop (Warhammer).We are also growing our team to continue the expansion of Frontier Foundry, our publishing label for games developed by carefully selected partner studios.
We have a modern spacious studio located on the Cambridge Science Park in the heart of the Cambridge tech hub. For those who wish to relocate to the Cambridge area and work either entirely in the studio or flexibly between the studio and home, we can provide generous financial and practical support to facilitate your move. We are also able to offer remote working for those who would prefer to work almost exclusively from home or who are unable to relocate. We are looking to expand our Frontier Foundry team to assist our current and future plans. We are looking for a Technical Director, a seasoned engineering leader who will evaluate, assess, and where needed, advise prospective and current Foundry partners on matters of technical implementation quality, risk, and solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct technical due diligence with prospective developers – both remotely and on-site when required.
- Audit and evaluate each title's technology, development pipelines, release strategy and post-release operations, providing recommendations where appropriate
- Evaluate prototypes to assess technical implementation
- Regularly review milestone deliverables (technical documentation and builds) across multiple titles and providing clear written and verbal feedback to the associated Executive Producers
- Flag risks and working with 3rd parties to understand appropriate and realistic mitigations
- Contribute direct intervention as appropriate and necessary to support technical execution. Could involve hands-on problem solving to sourcing co-development partners, or other solutions as needed.
- Maintain strong relationships with 1st party developer relations
- Maintain strong relationships with Frontier’s internal technical staff in order to leverage domain-specific knowledge where useful and applicable to 3rd party projects
- Attend trade shows and media events as needed, for project scouting and program evangelism
About You:
- Technical generalist and enthusiast, with leadership experience shipping multi-platform titles on all the major consoles (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch) and PC
- Familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of Unreal and Unity at a minimum. Experience shipping 2+ titles on an internally developed game engine a plus.
- Has successfully shipped games through 2+ new console release cycles
- Expertise in online multiplayer titles highly desired. Familiarity with cross-play technical requirements an extra plus.
- Experience assessing, articulating, and mitigating technical risk across multiple titles
- Has successfully collaborated with 3rd parties to deliver high quality, performant games, either in an outsource capacity or via 3rd party publishing
- Familiarity with a wide range of 3rd party technical solutions providers – capabilities and reputation – a plus
- An effective communicator who is able to tailor information and presentation toward different audiences
- Healthy balance of empathy, straightforwardness, resourcefulness, and pragmatism
