Job Description

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Head of Creative Operations, along with the Department Manager the Head of Department is responsible for day-to-day operations and long-term strategic management of the 3DDMP department.

Primary Responsibilities:

Managing the team:

• Manage the training and integration of new artists into the existing team in accordance with the global needs of the business
• Recruiting and casting of the Leads
• Cast and assign appropriate teams to the various projects, balancing the financial, technical and creative considerations of the task
• Nurture creative vision and technical ability, while ensuring balanced personal and professional development
• Assess performance of the team through appraisals (formal as well as informal), and manage career growth and promotions within the wider considerations of the company

Strategy and technical development:

• Have a compelling strategy and vision for the future of the department
• Keep up to date with industry developments and tools
• Ensure the department remains relevant in an ever changing global industry
• Propose and oversee the development of new tools, workflows or techniques as required for successful and efficient delivery of shows
• Monitor workflow and techniques used in the team
• Collaborate with other department HODs to design workflows between their teams
• Report on workflows to the Head of Creative Operations

Show planning, maintenance and delivery:

• Work with the lead artists, supervisors and show production to bid or plan shots, and ensure the project methodologies, quality and schedule expectations are consistent and achievable
• Work with show teams to plan for future challenges and problem solve current issues
• Assist other artists, departments and supervisors solve issues as they arise during production, delegating work where necessary
• Create good communication channels with other departments, show production and senior management to ensure complex information is disseminated appropriately
• Ensure that work is delivered to MPC's global standards, on time and on budget

• Doter en personnel des équipes appropriées, les assigner aux divers projets, mettre en équilibre les considérations financières, techniques et créatives d’une tâche.
• Cultiver visions créatives et habiletés techniques tout en veillant à assurer un perfectionnement personnel et professionnel équilibré.
• Évaluer le rendement de l’équipe au moyen d’évaluations (tant formelles qu’informelles) et gérer l’avancement professionnel et les promotions en tenant compte des considérations plus vastes de l’entreprise.
• Stratégie et développement technique
• Disposer d’une stratégie et d’une vision convaincante relativement à l’avenir du service.
• Se tenir au fait des développements et des outils au sein de l’industrie.
• Veiller à ce que le service demeure pertinent au sein d’une industrie globale en constant changement.
• Proposer et superviser l’élaboration de nouveaux outils, nouveaux flux de travail ou nouvelles techniques afin d’assurer une réalisation réussie et efficace des projets.
• Surveiller les flux de travail et les techniques employées dans l’équipe.
• Collaborer avec d’autres chefs de département afin de concevoir des flux de travail inter-équipes.
• Rendre compte des flux de travail au Chef des Opérations créatives.

Planification, maintien et réalisation de projets

• Collaborer avec les artistes principaux (Lead), les superviseurs et le personnel de production des projets afin de proposer ou de planifier des plans, et veiller à ce que les méthodologies et la qualité des projets ainsi que les attentes quant aux calendriers soient cohérentes et réalistes.
• Collaborer avec les équipes de projets afin de se préparer à relever les défis futurs et de résoudre les problèmes actuels.
• Aider les autres artistes, services et superviseurs à résoudre les problèmes à mesure qu’ils surgissent durant la production, en déléguant des tâches lorsque nécessaire.
• Créer de bons canaux de communication avec les autres départements, le personnel de production des projets et la haute direction pour s’assurer que les renseignements complexes sont disséminés adéquatement.
• Veiller à ce que le travail soit exécuté conformément aux normes mondiales de MPC et en respectant tant les délais que les budgets.

Qualifications

Skills and Experience

• Technical Knowledge/Skills:
• A strong technical background is essential
• Solid knowledge of VFX shot production
• Strong technical understanding of CG pipelines and the ability to develop efficient environment workflows and identify additional tools required
• Up-to-date knowledge of VFX tools and emerging technologies
• Outstanding expertise and understanding of 2.5D and 3D environment creation and processes in a live action movie context and pipeline
• Strong understanding of composition, color workflows, perspective, lighting and lookdev and general film-making concepts in live action and full CG context
• High level experience modeling, texturing, layout, lighting and lookdev
• Expert working knowledge of Maya, Nuke and Photoshop
• Knowledge of Mari, Katana, Renderman and Houdini is a plus

Experience:

6+ years of proven leadership and management experience in a leading VFX company or associated industry
