Discord is looking for an experienced senior leader to build out our Data Engineering function! Data Engineers at Discord build and support foundational high-leverage data sets that power tools, analyses, and models. As Head of Data Engineering, you will establish and drive a vision for data architecture and data quality across the complete suite of company verticals. You will

Develop and execute a roadmap to build and optimize foundational data sets to ensure delivery of high-quality, trustworthy, ergonomic data across all company verticals
Develop and execute a roadmap to establish data quality as a given, at scale
Partner closely with data platform teams to identify opportunities to improve infrastructure and influence their roadmaps accordingly
Inform architectural decisions, establish best practices, develop lean scalable processes, and contribute to the overall direction of the Data organization at Discord!;
Build and mentor a world-class team, expanding the impact and reach of data at Discord.
Establish a collaborative culture that thrives on innovation and impact

You have

10+ years experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or data architecture
5+ years experience as a data engineering leader and have successfully managed multiple other managers and individual data engineers
You have experience hiring and growing senior leaders and managers
4+ years of experience in designing, developing, and maintaining robust data models based off of structured and unstructured sources at massive scale
Excellent communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences, with an ability to explain complex concepts in easy-to-understand ways and navigate ambiguous environments where problems are not well-defined (and evolve quickly)
Experience proactively identifying opportunities to improve ETL & dashboard performance and cost
4+ years experience writing excellent Python
Experience leveraging your excellent communication skills to thrive in ambiguous environments where problems are not well-defined and evolve quickly
A desire to work with amazing, passionate people who care deeply bout solving challenging problems to improve Discord
Last but not least - a collaborative attitude and a healthy dose of natural curiosity!

Bonus Points

Passion for Discord or online communities
Experience woning and proactively improving the data models, implementing best practices and influencing large-scale change
Experience collaborating directly with data science and product engineering teams
Experience with BigQuery SQL, Looker, Airflow, and DBT or similar
Experience with designing data architecture to power a variety of uses cases, including experimentation
