Rockstar Toronto is on the lookout for a talented Gameplay Technical Designer who is passionate about gameplay and character mechanics, specifically how it relates to melee and weapon-based combat. This is a full-time permanent position based out of Rockstar’s unique game development studio in Oakville that has been involved in some of the most highly respected and widely recognized AAA titles in video games such as Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, Bully, and Max Payne.
WHAT WE DO
- We create believable characters using both AI and animation techniques.
- We create believable worlds that players can get immersed in.
- We develop combat systems that involve melee, grappling, weapons, and character damage.
- We work as a global design team across multiple studios as well as working closely with other designers, animators, and programmers.
- We follow an iterative process where we tune and polish features.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work closely with designers, animators, programmers, and technical directors to help design, tune, and balance combat systems and mechanics.
- Work to deliver features on schedule that achieve the highest level of quality and that meet set design goals.
- Work with in-game and in-house tools to setup and tune combat data and provide feedback for improving workflows.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A degree or diploma in game design or relevant experience.
- Minimum of 4 years' game industry experience.
SKILLS
- A problem solver with a strong interest in game design and has a keen eye for detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter who can independently see tasks through to completion.
- Passion for playing and creating cutting edge video game experiences.
PLUSES
Please note that these are desirable skills and are not required to apply for the position.
- Scripting or programming experience.
- Experience developing player character mechanics in a first- or third-person game.
- Experience developing melee mechanics in a first- or third-person game (hand-to-hand and weapon-based combat).
- Experience tuning firearm and damage gameplay.
- In-depth familiarity of Rockstar products is a massive plus.
