We’re ArenaNet. We make the games we want to play and infuse them with innovation, hand-crafted detail, and creative passion. As developer and publisher of the award-winning Guild Wars game series, we’re proud to share our passion for the online worlds we’ve created with over 11 million players worldwide.

We are looking for an experienced Gameplay Engineer to work directly with designers and across other disciplines to support rapid prototyping of gameplay ideas using the Unreal Engine. This individual will provide the technical backbone for exploring design ideas, provide options to designers and seek opportunities to find the fun through rapid iteration and regular playtests.

The initial focus of this role will be on rapid prototyping but will shift into taking the knowledge gained to produce production quality gameplay systems and content. This role will balance ongoing prototyping of new ideas at a rapid pace in a less restrictive environment with a conversion of those ideas into code that can stand up to the stability, performance, and maintenance needs of AAA quality multiplayer game.

If you find glorious purpose in working shoulder to shoulder with designers to bring form to innovative ideas and playing them with the team for feedback in regular and rapid iterations; if you find joy in taking that knowledge to produce high quality code that will stand the test of time and the erratic excitement of millions of players, then this role is for you.

ABOUT OUT TEAM

The Engineering team at ArenaNet thrives on a wide array of perspectives, experiences, and interests. We know that the best creations come from healthy and friendly teams. Our work is woven together with the efforts of other disciplines and crafts within game development. We seek out voices and ideas that might be new to us. We are always on the lookout for ways to help each other, both within the Engineering team, and throughout the studio as a whole.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

You, our ideal candidate, will have had experience using UE4 to work closely with designers and other disciplines throughout the full cycle of development but especially in the concepting/prototyping stage. While prototyping is key for this role, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to shift between a prototyping mindset and a production mindset and how to maintain this balance throughout the lifespan of a project.

You will have strong listening skills to understand design goals and will be able to creatively synthesize solutions for those goals based on your experience and the capabilities of the engine. You will show strong communication skills to present those options in a way that makes sense to designers and the rest of the team.

You will show the ability to work together with non-technical colleagues to develop good practices, technical constraints, and team standards. You will always be endeavoring to improve processes, tools, and workflows to maintain the quality and stability of the work produced across disciplines in a fast-paced environment.
