Game Designer
We’re Ludare Games Group, a game studio, and publisher located in the heart of Downtown Vancouver, Canada. We’re forming a team to create new indie games for PCs and consoles.
The team is lean-and-mean, and we’re looking for a generalist, able to do more than create the GDDs and fill-in spreadsheets. We’re looking for a solid PC/console game designer who:
- Knows their way around Unity.
- Designs first in terms of core gameplay loops. What is the player doing second-to-second, minute-to-minute, hour-to-hour? How do these loops work together to define a great gameplay experience?
- Designs the narrative context for those gameplay loops -- i.e., the characters, setting, lore, etc -- for players to escape into.
- Designs games you can play over-and-over for years.
Is this you? Are you ready to collaborate with the team’s game designers, artists, and other Unity developers to build the next great indie game? If the answer is yes, please apply!
Responsibilities:
- Design premium PC/console games in terms of gameplay loops, narrative, and replayability.
- Prototype your ideas in Unity in collaboration with the team.
- Design all aspects of the game, whether it’s the core gameplay, levels, economies, systems, UX, cinematics, combat, enemies, etc.
- Write living game design documents in whatever format best suits the team.
- Create gameplay content (e.g., levels, weapons, other items, etc.) in production using Unity and other tools.
- Playtest and tune the game primarily using Unity and other tools.
- Guide the iteration of the game based on your playtesting and tuning.
- Mentor more junior members of the team.
Requirements:
- Background in PC game design (4+ years).
- Solid feel for game mechanics and the math/physics behind them.
- Comfortable working with the Unity Editor.
- Handy with spreadsheets as so much design comes down to the numbers.
- Experienced working on game teams and to a schedule.
- Driven to learn and improve your game development skills.
- Respond well to feedback to iterate and improve your work.
- A problem solver who doesn’t stop at the first sign of trouble.
- An avid PC and console gamer!
Nice-to-Haves:
- Background in console game design.
- Shipped games on PC or console.
- Experienced implementing your designs in Unity with C# and other game dev tools.
- Familiar with Git, Git LFS, and GitHub.
- Experienced managing game teams.
