Experienced Landscape Artist

We are seeking a Landscape Artist to join Playdead’s team. The ideal candidate will have experience with creating and managing Landscapes in 3rd party software and game engines. You will preferably have experience with constructing Landscape Materials and Layers and authoring textures for terrains.
Your main responsibilities will be to oversee the production pipeline for the Landscape,work closely with the art department to visually deliver the art style and meet technical performance requirements in Unreal Engine 5. This will include managing the Landscape Material and making sure the system is intuitive for the Level Artists to use whilst iterating on feedback from the team as a whole. You will be developing the Landscape using 3rd party software and generally assisting with all aspects of the Landscape pipeline to create a large, third-person, open-world game. For all of these tasks, you will work closely with the artists, programmers and designers here at Playdead. We are particularly looking for a colleague who enjoys setting their own goals and taking responsibility for their own schedule.
We are working within a highly focused and ambitious vision, which requires adapting to the existing visual style while contributing your own ideas to the whole. More than anything, we are looking for someone who is excited about all facets of game development, as well as being passionate about gaming overall.
What will you be doing?
- Working on and managing the Landscape development and pipeline using 3rd party software to create the terrain and implementing it in Unreal Engine 5
- Managing the Landscape Material and Layers alongside a small but dynamic art team
- Collaborating with a dedicated team with high ambitions about visual and thematic design
Required Skills
- Professional working experience within a 3D game production is essential
- An appropriate portfolio of work which demonstrates artistic development of Landscapes - terrain authoring and management (Texture and Material work would be a bonus)
- Comfortable using various tools and software to create terrain for an open-world game (World Machine, Gaia, or other terrain software)
- Able to collaborate with others across disciplines on shared projects and communicate your ideas effectively
- This is a full-time position at our studio in Copenhagen, Denmark so you will need to be willing to relocate (we offer full relocation support)
Desired Skills
- Familiarity with major game engines
- Experience with authoring tiling textures and materials for terrain using Substance Designer, ZBrush or any other texture generation software
