Senior Engineering Manager - Riot Data Products

As an Engineering Manager at Riot, you have a blend of technical and interpersonal skills that allow you to build a functioning engineering team. You don't shy away from getting in the weeds and have scope of experience in both organizational design and software development. You will also mentor, and lead a range of engineers and will be tasked with performance management, fostering growth opportunities, and setting expectations and goals for your team.

Riot Data Products (RDP) is a central engineering team whose mission is to build solutions that equip Rioters with data technology that helps them to improve the player and Rioter experience. Our products range from data pipelines deployed globally that allow our game teams to publish a million plus events per second into our data ecosystem all the way to single page web apps that guide essential processes inside of Riot and influences our ability to analyze data about Riot, our people, our players, and our games. Our primary customers are data scientists and engineering teams, but we also serve the data needs of all global Rioters.

As Senior Engineering Manager in RDP, you will lead a team that oversees our core data platform that is used globally by teams to collect raw data at scale with high availability, and reliably for further processing and analysis. The platform is the primary entry point to ingest everything from in game telemetry to inform game designers about how their changes are affecting gameplay to providing high-volume data sets to train machine learning models to providing our senior executive team reporting dashboards that essential metrics around our health and performance. You will work with the team to continue iterating on the data platform adding new features and work in partnership with engineering teams across Riot to onboard and best use the platform to meet their needs.

Responsibilities:

• Develop product vision, identifying possible capability gaps, and construct essential technology milestones and goals
• Engage with product and engineering leads across the organization to help onboard them onto the data pipeline platform and identify potential risks or gaps that might inform future platform roadmap decisions
• Mentor engineers in their technical craft, provide career guidance, and help shape their long-term aspirations
• Build a team of engineers and help continue to attract top talent to Riot Engineering
• Design on call rotations, incident response plans, escalation paths for critical live services
• Manage varying types of vendor relationships from contract staff augmentation, consulting services, and software providers
• Plan and execute change management around high scope projects ranging from the launch of new global platforms to the sunsetting and deprecation of legacy systems

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or comparable field
• 5+ years experience of direct people management of small to medium sized teams
• 5+ years experience working with Agile scrum teams supporting live/production services at scale globally
• Coding or scripting experience in a professional setting using languages including: Java, Python
• Knowledge of enterprise data storage and transport technologies, e.g. Kafka, RabbitMQ, Kinesis, MySQL, Postgres, etc.
• Knowledge within a diverse set of public cloud technologies: AWS RDS, S3, EC2, Lambda, Google Cloud Big Query, Google Cloud Bigtable, etc.
• Experience deploying microservices within a container orchestration framework (Docker, ECS, Kubernetes)

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience managing vendor relationships (staffing, SaaS providers, etc.)
