Engineering Manager - Integration and Authoring Tools, Defence
1 year ago
The ‘Integration & Authoring (I&A) Tools’ team is part of our Modelling and Decision Science group, in Product Engineering. The I&A Tools team aim to make the experience of development and delivery of new solutions on our platform easier, faster and more accessible. They achieve this through design, development and delivery of software development kits (SDK) and other development tools, as part of our Synthetic Environment development platform, a key component of Improbable Defence’s product offering.
The work from this team enables model engineers, applied scientists and content providers (both within Improbable and from an increasingly growing and diverse ecosystem of partners), to quickly and easily create new performant models, integrate them into our synthetic environment platform, and publish them onto our ecosystem of content.
We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead and grow this team, providing technical support and direct line management to those within it. The Engineering Manager will work alongside the product owner, technical delivery manager, and the rest of the team to ensure delivery by the team according to business requirements and the technical roadmap.

Areas of Impact:
- You will run the day to day operations of the I&A Tools team, including line management and task allocation.
- You will understand the business drivers, functionality requirements, architecture, and technologies behind the products and systems you own and provide context and visibility into the reasoning behind decisions whilst empowering your engineers to independently execute.
- You will be responsible for decomposing complex problems into pragmatic straight-forward solutions with your team and planning the time and resources needed for successful project delivery.
- You will consistently bring strong, data-driven business and technical judgement to decisions.
- You will grow a team of successful engineers through collaborative development planning, coaching, and empowerment through strategic goals.
- You will proactively develop and promote top performers and will play a key role in performance and promo reviews.
- You will collaborate with other EMs and Senior SWEs/Principals to determine the strategic direction and long-term viability of your architecture, both from a business and technology standpoint.
- You will help to shape the team’s design and development practices as well as contributing to the design process, reviewing code and making individual contributions where possible.
We would like to hear from you if you identify with the following:
- As an experienced people manager, you will have a clear focus on managing the development and growth of the team. You ascribe to the idea of servant-leadership and are motivated by the success of your teams.
- You have experience leading a product-focused technical team, with an understanding of delivering modelling and applied science work.
- You will be a great communicator, with the ability to engage with people in other roles such as senior engineers and product managers, develop successful working relationships and manage stakeholders effectively.
- Previously, you have led high-performing, happy teams; building complex modern technology, ideally with a tooling, SDK, or modelling science focus.
- Coming from an extensive scientific background (e.g. at PhD level or equivalent), you are able to leverage that knowledge to coach and develop your reports.
- As an empathetic communicator you can navigate tricky situations, having tough conversations where necessary, and being objective and structured in your approach to all personnel matters.
- Importantly, you are considerate, humble, and a strong believer in teamwork.
