Engineering Manager - Data Science
Discord Secret Sauce recipe:
-3/4th of a cup of recommendation systems that allow our users to discover content they might enjoy
-2/3rds a cup of characterizing a healthy Discord server and learning how can we help more server owners build healthy communities
-1/2 a cup of developing applied machine learning models to tag voice sessions with poor voice quality in real time
-Pinch of sugar (it helps balance the acidity)
If you’re a master Data Scientist chef who wants to take a crack at this recipe and look through our expansive cookbook for more, we’d like to invite you into our massive, data-driven kitchen.
What you'll be doing
- Leading and mentor our small but growing team of data scientists
- Working closely with data scientists, engineers, product managers and marketers to develop algorithms that power key product features
- Making Discord smart: Develop and productionize machine learning algorithms that help drive key features of Discord such as voice chat or content ranking
- Applying advanced statistical techniques to rigorously model user behavior, identify causal impact and attribution, and build and benchmark key metrics
- Designing, running, and analyzing A/B and multivariate hypothesis tests aimed at optimizing our models and/or parts of Discord
What you should have
- BA/BS in Computer Science, Math, Physics, Economics, Statistics, or other quantitative fields.
- 5+ years post-university work experience doing data science (preferably in the tech industry) and proven track record of team mentorship
- 3+ years experience designing algorithms that can be deployed at scale in production
- Extensive experience in machine learning, data science and/or at least one statistics package such as SciPy, Pandas, SPSS, or TensorFlow
- Thorough understanding of common statistical methods and applications — A/B testing, probability, and regression
- Fluency in SQL and a programming language such as Python, Java, R, or Scala
- Deep understanding of modern machine learning techniques and their mathematical underpinning, such as classification, recommendation systems and natural language processing
- Awesome attitude and a healthy dose of natural curiosity. Questions have to be answered and our data isn't just going to analyze itself. (We're working on that.)
Bonus Points
- A love of gaming and familiarity with the games industry.
- MS/PhD in Math, Physics, Statistics, Data Science or other quantitative fields.
- Direct management experience & proven track record of building data science teams
- Experience with large data sets and distributed computing (Hive/Hadoop)
- Familiarity with technologies such as Airflow, AWS Redshift, and/or BigQuery to build and optimize production data pipelines
- Ability to work with dashboarding software such as Looker, Chart.io or Google Analytics
- Pro-level ability to synthesize and communicate complex concepts and analyses in simple, easy-to-understand ways
