Engineering Manager, Data Platform

At Strivr, our engineering teams develop immersive experience software and a cloud-based software platform that powers the creation, management, and experience of immersive learning with a unique level of insights and predictive analytics. The platform is scalable, secure, and compliant which is critical to making our customers and users successful on our platform. The engineering team is distributed and located in offices in Seattle and Palo Alto. We capture and analyze device, usage, sentiment and assessment data, attention and engagement data based on spatial (gaze, hand), and voice data over tens of millions of in-headset immersive learning and training sessions. We are developing a streaming analytics platform that will allow us to process, join, aggregate, reform, and query data across these very large structured and unstructured datasets to produce immersive analytics with deep insights on learning sessions. Consumers include customers and users for insights on their learning and training performance, internal users like Data Scientists and Data Analysts to access raw and processed data from pipelines using notebooks with the latest data science and machine learning frameworks to develop, experiment with, and train learning models.
We are seeking Engineering Managers or Engineering Directors, who are passionate about data engineering and analytics, building high-performance and collaborative teams, and leading them to develop secure, scalable, and reliable data pipelines and platforms. You will work with engineering and product leadership to craft the long-term roadmap and quarterly deliverables for the Data Platform, ensuring that we provide a unique level of insights and analytics to customers and users on how to train, learn, and perform using our immersive learning platform.
You will be responsible for tactical execution by the team, helping to coordinate activities such as sprint planning, design reviews, and project planning. In addition, you will be responsible for hiring and grooming world-class talent for your team. You will work with engineering leadership to establish hiring targets and priorities for the team and help find and recruit talent for these positions. You will mentor engineers and help them grow along their career paths, identifying and grooming talent for technical leadership roles. You will be responsible for helping engineers set goals for individual growth, including reviewing and delivering performance feedback to engineers.
Your responsibilities:
- Building and managing a high-performance team: Recruit and hire strong engineers into the team. Manage engineers and develop engineering leads. Provide feedback, guide promotions and leveling processes. Foster an environment of innovation, execution and collaboration.
- Technology leadership: Review and drive the long term technical direction of Strivr’s Data Platform and features. Ensure high technical standards by instituting a culture of engineering excellence and driving processes like design and architecture reviews, testing for resiliency, reliability and security, monitoring of infrastructure and services.
- Planning and execution: Work to scope and plan key deliverables for projects and initiatives with the team. Drive execution with an emphasis on iterations and deliverables, quality, velocity, and communication.
- Collaboration: Coordinate within the organization with Product Management, Data Science, Marketing, and Support to ensure delivery of key initiatives. Influence product strategy partnering with the Product Management and Data Science teams.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Prior or current experience of 5+ years as a software or data engineer writing code in a language like Java, Go, C#, and/or Python
- Prior or current experience of 2+ years leading a high performance engineering team. Ability to attract, hire, and coach world-class engineers
- Experience with development and operationalization of a large scale distributed web services and the processes around testing, monitoring, and SLAs to ensure high product quality
- Experience with development and operationalization of a large scale data pipeline for structured and unstructured data, and a data platform for insights and analytics used by customers, and internal users like Data Scientists, Data Analysts, and Product Managers
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, both technical and non technical
- Passion for driving execution with efficient processes that increase velocity, quality, and communication in a distributed team and organization
- Strong database fundamentals including SQL and operational experience with databases and data warehouses
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with scaling engineering teams from 5 to 15+
- Experience with technologies for data processing and storage such as Kafka, Spark, Beam, BigQuery, Druid, GCS, S3
- Experience with development of a SaaS platform and services on public cloud computing Google Cloud or Azure or AWS
