Engine Network Programmer

Our Shared Technology Group is primarily responsible for developing and maintaining our in-house engine Cobra. They also serve as a group of domain experts to advise game teams on technical problems, best practice and use of Cobra for their games.

We have an exciting opportunity for an engine networking programmer to join our highly talented and experienced engine programming team.

You will help to create, develop, and maintain the networking systems of our Cobra engine, with an initial focus on our upcoming Warhammer: Age of Sigmar (AoS) RTS.

Cobra plays a huge part in our future success and enables our game teams to realise their creative visions. Your passion for engine technology will be pivotal to delivering the quality that we strive for in all our games.

Experience working on previous online multiplayer games will be vital to success in this role as being able to pre-empt and debug real-world networking issues is a top priority for the project.

Responsibilities

• Developing and maintaining networking systems for the Cobra engine.
• Ensuring that Cobra's networking systems are as robust as possible for different network conditions.
• Driving Cobra's networking technology forward by identifying areas for improvement and the work required to achieve this.
• Collaborating with game development teams to develop shared technology with clean, robust and well tested implementations and APIs, which meets their requirements and needs.
• Writing technical documentation for Cobra networking systems.
• Providing mentoring and guidance to programmers to support their growth.

About You

• Passionate about multiplayer games and network architecture, in particular at an 'under-the-hood' engine level.
• Possess good analytical and problem solving skills.
• Have a good understanding of how to write maintainable systems with well-presented APIs, that run efficiently on modern hardware.
• Able to communicate effectively with other developers and stakeholders from other disciplines.
• Have a drive for learning and skills development.
• Good at managing your time and prioritising tasks appropriately.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

• Essential
• Good understanding of C++, data structures and algorithms, and software engineering principles.
• Experience developing engine systems and robust public facing APIs.
• Experience developing networking systems in released AAA games with online multiplayer components.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Desirable
• Experience with console development, and certification requirements pertaining to networking and online multiplayer.
• Knowledge of how cross-platform requirements may influence network implementation.
• Experience profiling and optimising network traffic.
• Experience debugging real-world networking issues that are dependent on particular network conditions.
• Familiarity with multithreading and writing asynchronous systems.
• Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python.
• Good natural technical writing ability.
