Director of Platform Engineering, Defence

As the Director of Platform Engineering for Improbable’s Defence and National Security Business, you will form the strategy and technical direction of the suite of Defence Platform Technologies. You will support your team in the execution of this plan alongside the Product Roadmap, Business Development Funnel, and Market demands. You will design, build, scale and lead world class engineering teams for Defence. Your north star is to enable our platform to become the de-facto enabling technology for full spectrum synthetic training, planning, and operational decision support solutions.

Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you will play a key role in shaping the platform strategy of the Defence organisation, leveraging deep technical expertise to lead a high-quality, rapidly scaling organisation. Long term we envisage this role will scale in responsibility and scope as we scale as an organisation. The teams currently number c.20 with active ongoing recruitment to drive us nearer to 60+ over the next 9 months.

Improbable’s Defence business enables transformative synthetic environments, bringing multi-domain mission planning and collective training together across the strategic, operational and tactical levels.

Our mission is to enable the most realistic and sophisticated military simulations ever experienced, decreasing the cost of preparedness and improving effectiveness on operations. We believe that the grand scale adoption of single synthetic environments by governments and international institutions will give rise to a powerful capability for global good. New levels of whole force preparedness and the harnessing of previously unattainable foresight will ultimately prevent states from stumbling into war; contributing to a more secure and prosperous world and bringing about the end of unnecessary human conflict.

Improbable’s Defence and National Security business develops a software platform that enables the creation of these single synthetic environments. We combine scientific modelling, advanced AI and data analytics with a flexible and secure deployment model, creating a powerful simulation platform tailored to the needs of the defence community.

Single synthetic environments give decision makers a constantly improving picture on how to best prepare for and prevail in any conflict. Improbable’s platform architecture provides the defence industry access to new market opportunities through a synthetic content ecosystem, enabling defence developers to reuse and repurpose existing models and build new models of the real world in a fast, efficient and iterative way.

Areas you will impact

• You will plan the technology direction, strategy, architecture and solution for the synthetic environment platform strategy - with the aim of ensuring synthetic environments are synonymous with the Improbable Defence offering.
• You will constantly ensure that we are building a truly world-class platform, tooling and services offering that delivers greater value to the customer than existing solutions
• You will help us crystallise our product offering through working with product managers, senior engineering managers, and principal engineers
• You will build, scale and lead a world class engineering team
• You will ensure we have the right skill set and support Engineering Operations to enhance our processes
• You will work closely with our partners and will manage the relationship with Customer & Partner Success (CPS) in both the UK and the US

We'd like to hear from you if you identify with the following:

• Proven experience in platform design, development and sustainment
• Deep technical knowledge with demonstrable career progression through roles with increasing technical proficiency
• Experience managing teams of 40+ people
• Strong understanding of cloud technologies
• Entreprise B2B experience
• Experience taking one to many products from conception, into market production and sustained for numerous years
