Director of Hardware Engineering

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Future Technology Group (FTG) provides, develops, and researches technology to power existing and future PlayStation gaming experiences. It is responsible for Cloud Gaming, the PlayStation® features RemotePlay, SharePlay, Share Screen as well as development of technology for AI, game controllers, VR headsets and headsets. FTG’s Game Platform Research and Development is responsible for research and development of technology for Cloud Gaming and Game Consoles across domains including Data Centers, Servers, Streaming, Rendering, Video Encoding, AI and Networking.
The team is looking for a strong Director of Hardware Engineering to lead an innovative team of hardware engineers and architects specialized in servers, racks, fabrics, FPGAs, ASICs, and PCB design. The ideal candidate will have experience in developing HW for large-scale deployment and leading and growing a team to push the boundaries of technology!
Responsibilities:
- Drive the vision, research, and development for SIE’s custom servers, rack designs and high-speed fabrics.
- Build and forge strong relationships with technology and development partnerships inside and outside of SIE to drive innovation towards our next-generation technology.
- Work with leadership across the organization to remove blockers, improve the overall development process, and drive cross team initiatives towards a common goal
- Manage, lead, and grow an innovative engineering team of hardware engineers.
- Provide regular status updates to upper management.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of 10 years of experience leading and managing highly technical teams that design, troubleshoot, monitor, analyze trends and optimize software programs related to embedded devices, systems, infrastructure, networking, and hardware related activities.
- Experience in managing development projects with ODMs and component vendors.
- Leadership experience in development of hardware for scale-out deployment.
- Expertise in Agile/Scrum methodologies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong ability to articulate technical information in a clear and concise manner at all levels from executive staff to engineers to form strong partnerships across the org.
- Strong cross-team collaboration and interpersonal skills with a variety of roles including engineering, product management, and support.
- Self-starter, with strong ability to operate in an unstructured environment.
Desired Skills and Knowledge:
- B.S. or M.S. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering with 5+ years of experience or a minimum of 10+ years of relevant work experience.
- Strong intellectual curiosity and a passion about learning and deploying new technologies.
- Experience with large-scale distributed systems, datacenter infrastructure, and cloud services engineering for compute, storage, and AI GPU applications.
- Understanding of computer architecture, interconnects, FPGAs, and storage technology.
- Understanding of hardware and software architectures for Cloud Gaming, AI and machine learning.
- Relevant experience outside of hardware engineering including software and firmware development.
- Experience with Japanese language and culture is a plus.

At SIE, we consider several factors when setting each role’s base pay range, including the competitive benchmarking data for the market and geographic location.
Please note that the base pay range may vary in line with our hybrid working policy and individual base pay will be determined based on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location.

The estimated base pay range for this role is listed below.
$222,400 — $333,600 USD
