Director of Communications

We’re looking for an experienced communications leader who’s got the chops to understand and drive the Discord comms vehicle. This pro will know the ins and outs of creating global communications strategies that result in increased visibility, user adoption, and revenue. You’ll be able to build strong partnerships with executives, key internal and external partners, and have deep knowledge of the media process and relationships with top press contacts. Shape our broader positioning through strategic campaigns that tell the story behind a product that people love and help us drive this car safely. Seriously, we’re not licensed to operate. We only have our permit.

Role and Responsibilities

Create comms strategies that map to business and growth goals

• Create Discord’s communications strategy and plan to create brand awareness and growth
• Continue to strengthen Discord’s reputation as a leading communications service for communities and friends
• Develop new programs and own daily execution for communications programs that align with the company and product goals
• Set a strategy, get support on the strategy, and accomplish the plan with clear outcomes
• Conduct primary and secondary research to develop data-informed campaigns and programs

Manage perception and foster narrative through media relations strategies

• Promote positive press on a diverse range of topics including business momentum and growth, use case anecdotes, product feature launches, and workplace and culture
• Surface and grow a pipeline of Discord user stories that can be leveraged to bring the product to life in the media working with community and marketing teams
• Establish and support relationships with essential business, product and industry media contacts at the international, national, and local levels; use relationships to counter misinformation that might interfere with our business and ability to serve users
• Be an essential spokesperson and trusted media contact for us with the ability to distill complex ideas into simple, intellectually credible narratives
• Offer executive leadership through, fast, and thoughtful recommendations and balance the demands of the media with our goals

Build a team (in-house and agency) and manage against strategy, timeline, and cross-team collaboration

• Interface and consult with teams across the company including product, marketing, community, business development and operations.
• Develop strategy for successful use of outside PR agencies, and work with external agencies to support growth, company, and product projects
• Manage team to support overall company strategy, giving them direction and guidance for specific product and business-area decisions
• Oversee and organize all of our communications assets, current and from the past: press lists, tracking docs, plans, written materials, videos, photos

Qualifications

• 9+ years of strategic communications experience, with expertise in scaling technology companies
• Background in bringing teams (and leadership) along a communications journey that shows company impact
• Experience developing strategy, collaborate across teams, and implement daily tactics through management
• Comfortable presenting around complex decisions across multiple team members.
• On-the-record experience with financial and business media outlets required; and media relationships with multiple global media outlets
• Track record for being an excellent hiring manager and building smart and accomplished teams
• Experience managing external agency relationships and previously have worked in a global PR agency.
• Excellent skills in managing difficult or complex situations, including crises and sensitive topics
