Director, Technical Program Management - Core Engineering
2 years ago
The opportunity
Unity Technologies is looking for a hardworking and experienced Director of Program Management to lead Core Engineering to its next level of operational maturity. As a director, you will be accountable for enabling product-led development teams to plan, collaborate, and deliver at scale. You will work cross-functionally with engineering, product, and program management leadership and other partners, improving transparency, quality and predictability in the development process while preserving Unity’s outstanding culture. Core Engineering is constantly evolving to orient us to our vision of the future, and this role is key to our continued success.
As the ideal candidate, you ride the line between Leader and Helper, acting as a force multiplier for development teams. You are relationship-driven, and comfortable wearing multiple hats: connector, mentor, reporter, translator, firefighter. You understand and appreciate the tension between driving for scaled practices and maintaining a culture of individual empowerment, ownership, and trust. Your communication skills are outstanding, and you have an understanding of and appreciation for working across different cultures.
You will lead an organisation of technical program & project managers, with the shared mission of maturing Core Engineering to become a growing product-led organisation. As your TPM teams and closest partners are broadly distributed through North America and Europe, this role requires occasional international travel.
What you’ll be doing
- Be the standard bearer driving for operational excellence in Core Engineering, showing teams why and how to scale and leading the way
- Lead, support, and grow an organisation of technical program managers, enabling them to act as leaders and change agents across Core Engineering
- Aim for visibility and strategic cross-org collaboration with other business units who are building on top of Unity’s core engine technology
- Partner with TPM Operations, Release, Product and other stakeholders, ensuring engineering teams have what they need to succeed in their missions
- Internalise and evangelise Unity’s core values: Users first. Best ideas win. In it together. Go BOLD.
What we’re looking for
- Extensive experience in software program management, particularly in enterprise environments
- Experience leading change initiatives in large organisations
- Experience managing and mentoring program managers and managers of TPMs
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, both written and oral, to speak to a broad audience, including executive leadership
- Working in a globally distributed, multi-cultural environment
You might also have
- A background as a software developer and/or product manager
- Game development experience (Unity engine or otherwise)
