Blizzard Entertainment is seeking a talented and passionate design manager to manage and mentor designers on an unannounced AAA project. As a design manager, you will foster Blizzard’s core value of “Every Voice Matters" as you collaborate with the design team to build a strong culture of collaboration and empowerment. Your responsibilities will involve the career management, coaching, and performance management of the entire design staff. Please note, this role is a key leadership role for the team but is management-focused and therefore does not have explicit day-to-day development responsibilities. Your success will require an ability to lead without authority through direct partnership with the design director, lead designers, and your interpersonal skills.
We are a team of passionate developers that highly value open-minded collaboration, direct feedback, and the eagerness to grab and drive the development to Blizzard quality. As a design manager on the team, you will possess outstanding management, communication, and organization skills, and a thorough understanding of design department dynamics within game development.
COVID-19 Hiring Update: We’ve transitioned to a work-from-home model and we’re continuing to interview and hire during this time. This role is expected to begin as a remote position. We understand each person’s circumstances may be unique and will work with you to explore possible interim options.
Responsibilities
- Partner with the design director, design leads, and producers to manage individuals across the entire design department.
- Define and manage designer career paths within the team and across the studio.
- Mentor design leads on management and leadership.
- A solid strategist who helps the team with long-term planning.
- Supervise designers and provide work direction, performance reviews, and coaching for the team.
- Design and implement best practices around staffing, interviewing, and career development.
- Administer staffing decisions that help achieve both the short and long-term goals of the design team.
- Work with production to help create and manage team schedules and ensure proper workflow throughout the design department.
Requirements
- Strong communications and organizational skills.
- Able to handle a wide range of personnel issues including recruitment, career development, and conflict resolution.
- Able to manage a large team of designers in a dynamically changing game production environment.
- Able to interact as part of a team and to contribute to increasing productivity goals and efficiencies.
- Able to successfully deconstruct broad feature goals into prioritized tasks.
- Able to build consensus on overall goals and balance resource allocation based on project goals and individual ability.
- A minimum of 7 years’ management experience.
Pluses
- Have shipped AAA PC or console titles as a design department manager or design lead.
- Game design or content creation experience.
- Expertise with Microsoft Office.
- Passionate gamer with experience playing a wide range of games.
