The Riot Legal Team has the responsibility to constantly provide the highest quality legal services that fully align with Riot's company mission of putting players first. Figuring out what's "best for us" always begins with thinking about what's "best for players." Every policy or contract that we draft; every lawsuit that we file or defend against; every letter we send; and all the legal advice that we give to our partners is always done with our players' interests in mind.
As Counsel (Music), reporting to the Associate General Counsel, you'll support Riot on all areas of music law, from drafting agreements and counseling the business. You'll help the team keep its finger on the pulse of the changing legal landscape, and help Riot navigate any potential landmines across many of Riot's jurisdictions.
Responsibilities:
- Structure, negotiate and draft a variety of music-related agreements, including composing, songwriting, recording, performing, producing, mixing, and mastering services agreements, synchronization and master use licenses, record company and music publishing waivers, and co-publishing agreements, for new media, games, television, film, soundtracks and live events
- Support Riot Music Group in executing its global music strategy and product goals within Riot and with its external partners, including labels, publishers, and PROs
- Counsel teams regarding music legal issues (e.g., copyright, licensing, exclusivity and royalty matters) and advise on exploitation rights of music elements, highlighting potential risks and proposing practical solutions
- Review and analyze music and sound recording union related matters (e.g., AFM and SAG-AFTRA)
- Contribute as a generalist on other legal matters, including licensing and commercial agreements
Required Qualifications:
- J.D. from a U.S. law school and member of the California bar
- 3 years of experience working on music and licensing matters at a premier law firm or in-house at a music publisher, record company or other entertainment company
For this role, you'll find success through craft expertise, a collaborative spirit, and choices that focus on your fellow Rioters, who are the customers of your work. Being a dedicated fan of games is not necessary for this position!
