About CoolGames

Founded in 2010, CoolGames is a leading web games studio based in the historic center of Amsterdam developing high-quality casual games.

Games distribution via new platforms, beyond the traditional app-stores, is taking off quickly. Players can now instantly start a game from within Facebook, Discord, Netflix and many other ‘Big Tech’ game channels. And even the web is back as a seizable games distribution channel, with more people playing via websites each year.

In this changing landscape, where Apple and Google are no longer the sole destinations for casual gamers, CoolGames is successfully publishing high quality HTML5 games that are played by millions every month. For our studio, we have an ambitious roadmap to start the development of new game projects to further expand our portfolio for the years ahead.

About the job

As a backend developer, you will be part of the CoolGames studio. You design, build and maintain the systems that power our games. You ship, monitor and improve. You work closely with designers, quality assurance, developers, producers, to refine requirements and continuously improve and integrate backend solutions for our broad portfolio of high quality web games.

Our services are mostly written in Golang, partially in Typescript/NodeJS and a small bit of Python. We have several self hosted services next to our game backend systems.

This includes setting up new infrastructure (infrastructure as code), maintaining pipelines and deployment of existing games, as well as contributing to the maintenance and development of internal tooling related to AWS deployments and infrastructure.

You manage your own schedule to meet established deadlines. At CoolGames there is a high degree of autonomy with a strong focus on collaboration.

The team’s responsibilities include supporting, optimizing and creating backend functionality for our games. Taking part in code reviews and technical design proposals and processes. Making sure our infrastructure remains stable, performant, up to date and monitorable.

Requirements

The right candidate has most of the following qualities.

• At least 3 years of professional experience developing and maintaining backends;
• Strong fundamentals in programming;
• Solid knowledge of linux and infrastructure best practices;
• Experience with Ansible and Docker;
• You are knowledgeable in the following development concepts: CI/CD, DevOps, Agile;
• You are enthusiastic, eager to learn and have strong communication skills;
• You have a good command of the English language;
• Champions and enforces security best practices;
• A passion for Game Development!
• Experience with version control tools like Git and automation pipelines;
• Interest to learn more in both backend and managing infrastructure;
• Experience with working with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, Azure)

Good to have:

• Experience with Terraform and AWS is a plus;
• Solid understanding of network communication protocols;
• Experience with (some of) our languages/technologies in the backend stack is a plus (including Go, Ansible, Docker, NodeJS, TypeScript).
