Cinematics Director

The Cinematics Director manages the process of visual storytelling within games made by Gearbox.

Responsibilities :

  • Provide direction for real-time and pre-rendered visual storytelling (cinematics, title cards, moments, etc.) across key projects developed by Gearbox
  • Work with senior project stakeholders to set and maintain a quality bar for Gearbox cinematics
  • Work closely with the writing team in the design and development of key visual storytelling moments
  • Coordinate with other departments in the development of cinematics; identify assets, needs, and deadlines as necessary, and ensure cinematic quality standards are met by all contributors
  • Direct previsualization and/or storyboarding for cinematics and other narrative moments
  • Provide cinematics for stakeholder review on a regular basis throughout development, and manage the integration of feedback into the final product
  • Play a role in setting and reviewing cinematics standards for Gearbox at large
  • Assist in building a Gearbox Frisco cinematic department, identifying needed roles, and helping to hire and manage those roles
  • Set standards and select tools for cinematic development and the cinematics pipeline at Gearbox Frisco

Requirements :

  • 5+ years of experience in cinematic and/or visual storytelling development, preferably in the video game industry as a Senior or a Lead
  • Has shipped at least one AAA game or brings equivalent experience from a similar creative industry (Film, Television, etc.)
  • Strong skills with visual storytelling, with complementary skills including pacing, cinematography and shot development, and editing
  • Strong understanding of the cinematic pipeline:
    • Pre-production
      • Script previsualization, ideation, and problem-solving
    • Production
      • Hands-on work and oversight of cinematic development assets from contributing departments
    • Post-production
      • Awareness and oversight of editing, localization and (as needed) rendering of final cinematic product
    • Familiarity with the technical hurdles of developing cinematics in a video game engine (Unreal)
    • Excellent collaboration skills, and a track record of developing, and maintaining constructive professional relationships with colleagues across multiple disciplines and degrees of seniority
    • Broad knowledge of successful stories and franchises across all media
    • Ability to balance quality, workload, and deadlines, understanding where content is ‘good enough’ based on project goals and remaining time
