ENGINEERING - EPIC GAMES SERVICES
What We Do
Driving the plug-in power behind Unreal Engine 5. We bridge connections for licensees and our own internal game teams to online services. This allows games like Fortnite to utilize a combination of platform online services as well as Epic’s own online services to build cross-platform online features. Login, parties, voice chat, matchmaking, purchasing, cloud storage, and analytics are just a few examples of online features that our Online Game Services team helps games utilize.
What You'll Do
As a Backend Engineer Intern on the Game Services team, you will help craft and improve highly available, high throughput, low latency services that empower critical features in Fortnite such as virtual currency, subscriptions, in-game store, promotions, and many other monetization features. These services integrate with major PC, console and mobile platforms, and scale with popular games like Fortnite for years to come.
The Online Game Services team is a collaborative environment and a successful candidate will help to foster an open, supportive culture in which everyone can be successful and their authentic self. Learn more at https://dev.epicgames.com/

- Help build backend services that handle load at scale
- Work with game teams and client-side engineers to craft optimal end-to-end solutions
- Collectively own the entire lifecycle of the services, including live operations and deployment as a team
- Own the outcome - be accountable for the solutions you build and be flexible around the ambiguity of the problem space
What we're looking for
- Experience in building backend web services with Java
- Experience in interacting with REST APIs
- Eager to learn from, share knowledge with, and ultimately grow together with the team
- Nice to have: Experience in developing client-side applications for PC, gaming consoles, or mobile devices (e.g., C++, Unreal Engine, Unity)
- Nice to have: Knowledge with non-relational databases (e.g. DynamoDB, MongoDB, Redis, etc)
This internship has a flexible start date in 2024. Recruitment will be ongoing until teams find an ideal match.
