THE OPPORTUNITY
The Associate Software Engineer is responsible for working with designers and artists to design, create, optimize, and maintain game systems and custom tools in the Live Development Dept. at San Diego, CA , this position will be responsible for:
- Writing and test solid, reliable, and efficient code for highly scalable systems
- Working with designers and artists to design, create, optimize, and maintain game systems and custom tools
- Efficiently self-managing to balance working independently and with other developers
- Taking on miscellaneous tasks that require scripting and come up with solutions
- Documenting complex systems in a clear manner for others to rely as a reference and potentially expand upon
- Writing and editing scripts for deployment and various other systems. Node/JS, PHP, Python, bash, shell etc.
- Create or modify web-based tools for ease of access to the rest of the company. These tools are exposed to internal customers such as QA, Operations, and CS.
- Interaction with other teams, the ability to explain complicated computer concepts to non-programmers
- Ability to identify where tasks can be automated and the ability to implement them
- Ability to take on miscellaneous tasks that require scripting and come up with solutions
- Able to be self-motivated and organize tasks in order of priority
- Proven ability to quickly learn and implement unfamiliar technologies
- Be available on-call to diagnose and fix issues that may arise, as our games run 24/7
What craft expertise you’ll have:
- Tools/Technology /Knowledge
- A working proficiency in C++
- Knowledge of code versioning systems (Perforce is a plus)
Other Criteria
- Years of Experience, Education, and/or Certification…
- 2+ years software engineering experience either in school or for work
- S. in Computer Science or Computer Science Engineering or equivalent work experience is a plus
- Understanding of Linux-based systems and how to efficiently work in one
- Basic understanding of networking, also the various Linux debugging tools or utilities required to do so, in order to troubleshoot issues with your deployment or assisting our Network Engineering team.
- Must be eager to learn new systems constantly. This is a position where you will always be learning, so the desire to learn new things every day is vital
- Additionally, you should possess
- Experience in the games industry
- Ability to communicate (both in written and verbal methods) complex processes in a clear manner
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Versatility with different styles of programming
- Understanding of object-oriented software engineering principles and methodologies
- Familiar with JavaScript/Node.js, Java, PHP, Python, Bash, (Express, Vue, React or Angular)
- Familiar enough with HTML, CSS and SCSS to create custom user interfaces and tools.
- Experience with SQL and/or NoSQL (MySQL, Postgres / Redis / MongoDB) OpenTSDB and Prometheus Exp. nice to have.
- Experience working in version-controlled environments (Git and Perforce Exp. nice to have)
- Experience with Windows and Linux systems. Must know how to do basic things on a Linux host.
- Ability to work well on your own, but not afraid to ask for help when needed
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Experience with a frontend JS framework and JavaScript modules (Vue/Angular/React)
- How to build and manage large client-side libraries and applications.
- Experience with various back-end stacks (NodeJS and Java a must, C# and .NET nice to have)
- Experience with monitoring and alerting based on latency, errors etc. (Grafana Exp. nice to have)
- Experience developing and debugging inside Docker containers (Kubernetes nice to have)
- Experience with various JavaScript build scripts (Webpack, Gulp, SASS, Babel, TypeScript)
- Experience with build and deployment scripting like Jenkins, Ansible, Puppet, Chef, etc.
- Experience playing MMO’s isn’t required, but a huge plus as then you “get it”
