Associate Balance Designer | Marvel Contest of Champions
2 years ago
At Kabam, we’re constantly raising the bar of excellence in free-to-play mobile gaming. We hire for passion and diversity so that we can triumph in our collective skill. Our teams are made up of a fusion of personalities and interests bound together by a collaborative nature, fun-loving culture, and a drive to do what it takes to make great games. And this is where you come in…
We are hiring an Associate Balance Designer to join our Marvel Contest of Champions team at our Vancouver studio. This role will play a critical part in tuning and balancing our in-game characters, stats and abilities as part of our ever-growing roster of over 200 playable Marvel Champions. This role will benefit from years of experience playing the game as an end-user (to grasp the game’s characters, classes, game modes, and ecosystem), and will require the objective-mindedness needed of a product-focused designer.
Having the flexibility to work from where you believe you can have the greatest impact is important to us. We know that one size doesn’t fit all - every team has the flexibility to find the right balance between in-office, remote, and hybrid in-office/remote. Don't live in Vancouver? Apply anyway! This role is open to being fully remote and we support the basic setups for our employees. Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada, Washington, California, Colorado, or Texas and must be available to work during Vancouver’s core hours.
In this role, you can expect to:
- Define, communicate, and uphold a vision of Game Balance within the studio
- Monitor, measure, and maintain a large PvE and PvP ecosystem
- Work with other Designers to tune and balance Champion attributes, abilities, and supportive systems to maximize strategy, collection, build optimization, and take us closer to a vision of balance
- Organize and orchestrate focused playtests
- Monitor community channels and gather anecdotal feedback
- Arbitrate discrepancies between content design goals, player expectations, brand expectations, analytics, and our business model
- Liaise with non-dev teams such as Data, Live Ops, Community, Production, and Player Support, and maintain strong communication and coordination for balance-related topics and updates
- Establish and enforce guidelines for internal content creators to minimize metagame risks
- Develop tools and methodologies to efficiently balance thousands of permutations of character builds and team combinations
- Define and push to add new technology and processes to improve workflow and increase content quality
Your background includes:
- Advanced experience with Marvel Contest of Champions as a player (ideally at or near Level 60)
- Intellectual curiosity and logical thinking
- Razor-sharp analytical skills and resilient objectivity
- Robust organizational and project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with a firm understanding of your audiences
- Bonus if you have raw technical skills, including:
- Scripting experience
- Strong math skills
- Telemetry and data analytics
- Spreadsheet wizardry
- A hunger for new, different, and exciting design challenges
Excited by this opportunity? We invite you to apply now and start the conversation with us. Together, we can create and support some of the best games ever made and entertain the world!
