Job Description
When you’re an Assistant Animation Director at Ubi QC, your role is centred around inspiration: from the top-down and the bottom-up.
After inspiring the overall animation vision of a game, you define the direction of its characters narratively or in gameplay. And then empower a group of animators to see it through.
Though you communicate a clear direction, you stay open to its evolution, fostering an environment of creative freedom that allows every animator to come up with ideas that fit the feel of the game and enhance its visual identity.
Throughout production, you shift your focus from the micro-details to the big picture, keeping an eye on how everything comes together and holds as a whole. The ultimate goal? A rich, cohesive, immersive world for players to discover.
What you’ll do
- Help set out the animation direction through research in collaboration with the animation director.
- Communicate content and quality expectations to your team + connect members to inspirational and relevant visual references and documentation to guide them.
- Present and explain concepts to artists to connect them to the vision and orient them.
- Regularly meet with your team to give (and receive) feedback, share suggestions, set benchmarks, find balance between artistic aspects and technical constraints, etc.
- Team up with other directors to review and validate in-game content to achieve quality + ensure a consistent, unified direction.
- Carry out hands-on production tasks for a portion of the time.
Human Management
- Mentor the employees under their responsibility
- Meet with employees under their responsibility regularly to give them feedback and help them progress
- Participate in the recruitment of new members of the team and ensure the integration of new employees
- Develop a culture of sharing and push for continuous improvement within its trade community
- Address conflict situations and behavioral issues by seeking support from the HR team or the team's production manager as needed
- Write the annual report and the end-of-project report of the employees under their responsibility and help them identify their growth path
- Help create a healthy, inclusive and positive work environment and escalate issues that could affect employees or the project as needed.
Qualifications
What you bring
- Around 5 years of animation experience in the video game industry (or other relevant experience) + 2 years of leadership
- Knowledge of animation software like Motion Builder, 3DS Max, and Maya
- Knowledge of game engines (e.g. Unity or Unreal) and their limitations
- A degree in 3D Animation or Computer Graphics (or related training)
- Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills
- Open-mindedness: you’re receptive to new ideas and fresh perspectives
- Effective cross-departmental communication: you have the know-how to comfortably communicate with all disciplines (programming, design, animation, and so on)
- The ability to make a vision accessible and ensure that it is well understood by all
