Artiste technique sénior - Senior Technical Artist

Job Description

Relevant du directeur artistique ou du chef d’équipe technique et en collaboration avec l’équipe programmation et les chefs d’équipe personnages et environnements, l’artiste technique spécialisé en rendu conçoit et implémente les solutions de shading et d’éclairage nécessaires au maintien du processus de création de l’équipe de production. L’artiste technique aide à maintenir un pipeline de production efficace respectant les délais de production établis et les contraintes liées à la performance essentielles au bon maintien de la vision globale du jeu.

Principales tâches et responsabilités :

• Assister la création de scène PBR réaliste pour smartphone en respectant les concepts et les moodboards fournis
• Mettre en place des solutions de shading et de production de matériaux respectant la Direction Artistique mise en place
• Définir le niveau de détails nécessaire pour maintenir une cohérence visuelle respectant le concept initial
• Paramétrer les différentes solutions dynamiques d’éclairage et les effets de post-process disponibles pour parfaire l’ambiance globale d’une scène (lumière directe, fog, AO, tonemapping, color grading, LUT, vignette, bloom, DOF, optical flare, aberration chromatique, anamophic flare, etc.)
• Mettre en place les systèmes d’éclairage compatibles avec les limitations mémoire des plateformes cibles
• Evaluer l’utilisation du système d’irradiance/IBL qui sera utilisé par les objets dynamiques
• Collaborer avec l’équipe de développement 3D afin de maîtriser les contraintes de production et d’obtenir le support nécessaire à l’implémentation de nouvelles fonctionnalités et le développement de nouveaux outils
• Former les artistes à ces nouvelles techniques de production et s’assurer qu’elles soient compatibles avec les contraintes du moteur de jeu
• Vérifier la cohérence des différents matériaux et/ou des différentes textures fournis et leur conformité avec le style graphique et la méthode d’éclairage définis
• S’assurer de la compatibilité des éléments produits avec les différentes plateformes cibles, s’assurer de leur bonne intégration et de leur impact sur les performances
• Identifier et résoudre les problèmes liés au processus de création artistique
• Proposer des méthodologies de production efficaces respectant ces directives et les budgets/contraintes initiales (mémoire/package size)
• Assister l’équipe marketing le cas échéant (rendu statique, support technique pour capture d’une séquence vidéo du jeu)
• Maintenir un standard de qualité supérieur

Reporting to the art director or the technical lead, and working closely with the programming team and the character and environment team leads, the technical artist designs and implements the shading and lighting solution that are necessary to maintain the production team's creation process. The technical artist helps maintain an efficient production pipeline that respects the established production deadlines as well as the constraints related to performance that are essential to ensuring the global vision for the game is adhered to.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Helping with the creation of realistic real-time PBR scenes for mobile, while ensuring they are in keeping with the concept art and mood boards that are provided
• Setting the shading solution supporting the creation of materials matching the original Art Direction
• Setting the required level of detail to maintain visual consistency with the initial concept
• Configuring the various dynamic lighting solutions and available post-processing effects in order to refine a scene's overall ambience (direct lighting, fog, ambient occlusion, tone mapping, colour grading, look-up tables, vignettes, bloom, depth of field, optical flare, chromatic aberration, anamorphic flare, etc.)
• Producing the different light setups compatible with the memory limitations of target platforms
• Reviewing irradiance / image-based lighting systems to be used by dynamic objects
• Working with the 3D development team to contend with constraints related to production and to obtain the support required to implement new functionality and develop new tools
• Training artists in new production techniques and ensuring that those methods are compatible with the constraints of the game engine
• Checking that the various provided materials/textures are consistent and in keeping with the established graphical style and lighting methods
• Making sure that the elements produced are compatible with the various target platforms and that they are properly integrated and have the intended impact on performance
• Identifying and resolving issues related to the process of artistic creation
• Suggesting efficient production methods that are in keeping with the initial guidelines and budgets/constraints (memory / package size)
• Helping the marketing team, when needed (static rendering, technical support for in-game footage)
• Maintaining a superior level of quality

Qualifications

Compétences et qualités requises :

• Solides fondations académiques : mathématiques avancées (algèbre, calcul matriciel, différentiel, intégral), principes physiques mécaniques et organiques, théorie de la couleur, éclairage, composition…
• Excellente connaissance des techniques de rendu, d’éclairage et parfaite maîtrise des contraintes moteurs sur plateformes mobiles
• Culture visuelle étendue et intérêt porté aux innovations récentes dans le domaine (techniques de shading temps réel/ effets spéciaux numériques en post-production/recherche académique)
• Adaptation/polyvalence à différents styles/univers graphiques
• Parfaite compréhension des modèles de rendu/d’éclairage classique et physique (PBR)
• Notions fondamentales sur les méthodes de « shading » et les techniques de « baking » actuelles
• Connaissance des solutions d’édition de matériaux/géométrie (Substance Designer/Houdini)
• Connaissance des principaux langages de script utilisés en production (Lua, Python, Maxscript…)
• Connaissance d’OpenGL ES et des contraintes techniques associées au développement sur les plateformes mobiles actuelles (performance/mémoire)
• Connaissance du processus des langages de production graphique classiques (GLSL, HLSL, CG…)
• Connaissances en C++, C#
• Maîtrise des différentes solutions d’éclairage actuelles statique et temps réel (Vray, Arnold, Redshift, Beast, Enlighten)
• Maîtrise des processus traditionnels de modélisation 3D (MAX ou Maya), de création de textures et de création de matériaux compatibles avec des modèles de rendu et d’illumination physique réaliste (PBR) ou traditionnels
• Maîtrise des techniques de projection et de dépliage d’UV (overlapping, splitting, padding) et de packing d’UV
• Compréhension des différents modèles d’éclairage utilisés dans l’industrie

Required Skills and Attributes:

• Solid educational background: advanced mathematics (algebra; matrix, integral and differential calculus), physical principles both mechanical and organic, colour theory, lighting, composition, etc.
• Excellent understanding of rendering and lighting techniques, and complete knowledge of engine-related constraints on mobile platforms
• Broad knowledge of the visual arts and interest in recent innovation within the field (real-time shading techniques / digital special effects in post-production / academic research)
• Versatile and able to adapt to various visual styles/worlds
• Complete understanding of the classic and physical (PBR) rendering/lighting models
• Fundamental understanding of modern shading methods as well as current baking techniques
• Knowledge of material-authoring/geometry solutions (Substance Designer, Houdini)
• Understanding of the main scripting languages used in production (Lua, Python, MAXscript, etc.)
• Knowledge of OpenGL ES, and the technical constraints associated with development on current mobile platforms (performance/memory)
• Knowledge of the process behind conventional graphics-production languages (GLSL, HLSL, CG, etc.)
• Knowledge of C++, C#
• Mastery of traditional 3D modeling processes (Max or Maya), of texture and material creation that is compatible with rendering models, as well as of physically based rendering (PBR) and traditional rendering
• Mastery of UV projection and unfolding techniques (overlapping, splitting, padding) and of UV packing
• Understanding of various lighting models used in the industry
