Proletariat, Inc. is seeking an Art Director. In this role, you will guide and manage the visual aesthetic of Proletariat’s games by upholding a creative vision; maintaining established quality and consistency of art; utilize research and insights and give creative guidance. You will be a source of inspiration for art teams and set an example for the team with your aspirational artwork, vision statements, provocative feedback, and your understanding of the team and departmental production dependencies. You must be a highly organized problem solver, originator, ideator and partner to leads and stakeholders, team morale booster, and a patient and empathetic communicator and listener. You are expected to think creatively in all aspects of the role.
Responsibilities:
- Works closely with Studio Art Director, Art Leads, and other project stakeholders in setting project Art Direction.
- Sets the tone for Art Direction via research, insights, inspiring work, and feedback.
- Provides, communicates, and documents artistic direction/vision to the team.
- Mentors, collaborates with, and helps to guide art leads
- Amplifies the strengths of the team and advocates for team resources
- Identifies areas for team learning and growth; strives to get the best work out of all team members
- Contributes to cross-departmental projects as a creative partner.
- Communicates with partners across the organization, such as Tools and Engine stakeholders, representing project artists in presentations and strategy discussions.
- Identifies potential problems in the visual/creative pipeline and works with other project leads to prevent them, maintaining team roadmap with production schedules in mind
- Collaborates with Art Leads to establish expectations for visual quality in-game art with external/outsource teams.
- May be called upon to serve as the project lead for the art team on Proletariat’s projects, which would include style guide creation and grooming in collaboration with Studio Art Director and/or other Art Leads
- Stays abreast of game/creative industry trends.
- Interviews, hires, and onboards new team members in collaboration with Recruitment team.
Basic Qualifications:
- 8+ years in a Digital Game Dev Studio experience (also open to exceptional candidates with fewer years’ professional experience or from other entertainment industries)
- A portfolio that showcases varied, innovative, and appealing stylized work for video games and related visual entertainment media
- Has experience creating concept art, illustration art and some production knowledge with 3D art pipelines for games.
- Shipped games in Unreal or similar game engines
- Has mastery in at least two of the following - Maya, Photoshop, Zbrush, Substance, or any other tool commonly used for production of art assets.
- Has some working knowledge of current technology, terminology, and techniques of game development, including an awareness of design and programming considerations and some deep expertise within art development.
- Great communication and leadership skills; awareness and competency in guiding creatives in the digital and social space.
- Clear articulation of expectations, able to rally a team around one outcome and objective.
- Always pushes the art quality bar.
- Displays consistent, professional demeanor at all times; reacts well under stressful situations.
- Is a positive force in company morale and a force of empowerment to team members.
- Displays empathy, strong ethics, flexibility, confidence, self-awareness, and the ability to see all sides of complex situations.
- Is able to see the ‘‘big picture’’ of the project; able to see the project from a holistic point of view and understands need for compromise
- Able to effectively communicate art issues to non-artists; exceptional presentation skills for both internal and external creative presentations.
- Outsourcing review and communication experience.
- Good time management skills, Ability to provide oversight to multiple timelines, self-manage and meet deadlines.
- Must be able to work under pressure and within occasionally quick timelines.
- Mature and trustworthy professional as the role may require exposure to confidential materials.
- Must be proficient in presentation software and have working knowledge of PowerPoint and Google Slides
- Manager experience preferred
