2D Art Lead - Hearthstone

Pull up a chair and join us by the hearth! The Hearthstone team is looking for a versatile and inspiring Lead 2D Artist to mentor and guide a creative team in the creation of new and exciting content for our players. You’ll craft charming and engaging 2D illustrations, and work to maintain a consistent aesthetic quality for concepts and illustrations for the core game. This individual will also assess workflows, and help the team to learn and grow. The ideal candidate has a strong grasp of composition, color, texture, and visual design, as well as the ability to translate the Art Director’s vision into actionable feedback for the team.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with Art Director to support and evangelize the ongoing artistic vision and concept development for content within the Card Sets pod as we develop new expansions and new player experiences
• Mentor and guide a pod of 2D artists and be an active motivator in team discussions, critiques, and reviews to ensure timely completion of assets on style and at the desired quality bar.

• As much as possible, continue to create concepts for use throughout the Card Sets Pod including the playful game boards, card backs / packs, and logos all in the fun/whimsical style that is synonymous with Hearthstone.

• Coordinate with other art leaders, design, and production to help plan and accomplish the strategic goals of the 2D Card Sets art team.

• Document and communicate workflow and best practices to support consistency across the team. Where needed, provide visual benchmarks to support the visual targets of new content.

• Collaborate with Art Manager to guide career growth, motivate creative fulfillment, and improve the team’s abilities through mentorship of skills, process, and artistic techniques

Your Background

• Significant experience in game development as a lead or senior artist specializing in concept art, concept design, and/or illustration
• Portfolio demonstrating a passion for crafting charming and light-hearted imagery synonymous with Hearthstone
• Experience with recruiting exceptionally talented artists onto a team and helping them to “learn and grow” through mentorship and coaching.
• Able to effectively collaborate with every department of a game development team (game designers, programmers, tech art, animation, etc.).
• You’re a positive, proactive problem-solver and help lead by example while contributing to the studio culture with the actions you take on the team.
• You have a passion for Blizzard games and understand the unique approach to creating Blizzard art for our game universes.

Pluses

• Experience with creating hand-painted textures, especially related to the charming, colorful, illustrated world of Hearthstone
• Experience in Unity or relevant experience in the mobile game space
• Experience playing Hearthstone or other digital card games
