Senior Engineer - Krunker (WebGL + Javascript)

About You

You appreciate working with people who care about impact over hours worked, and who appreciate that you are amazing at identifying the 20% that gets us 80% of the way and then building them.

You enjoy going from batting around ideas to execution to deployment in super short cycles, and you like that you have a real voice on the team. You appreciate being a peer with other driven, skilled and focused people. You understand that some structure is beneficial to help humans work together, but you also feel comfortable raising a flag if the process gets out of hand. You don’t accept broken windows, and you don’t get overly bogged down perfecting every detail - the point is to create great experiences for players and move forward fast.

You’re also the type of person who dives fearlessly into internal and external code bases to find the bugs, the extra frames per second or the memory that you need to prove that given enough engineering talent (and grit), this game can feel good and run well even on a potato!

Intro

We're looking for Senior Game Engineers to help us build our Krunker games into their fullest potential. Krunker is a first-person shooter built on HTML5 tech, running on many channels and platforms, both mobile and desktop, and enjoyed by millions of players. We are on a mission to aggressively scale Krunker to every corner of the internet and be one of the most-played shooters of all time.

Krunker offers players different game modes, including Free for All, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and more. Krunker continues to evolve with the development of new modes and versions, to further expand the gameplay experience. To do this well, there are a lot of interesting engineering challenges to solve.

As a Senior Game Engineer, you are responsible for creating and executing the technical vision for the game as well as collaborating with the rest of the engineering team on the project on building new stuff, improving existing systems, and improving the overall quality of the game. You will be working with all aspects of the games including gameplay, rendering, tooling, physics, client- and server-side game code and networking.

Challenges & Responsibilities

• Be hands-on in building and enhancing games, game engines, backend API integrations, and associated tooling
  
• Building online multiplayer games and applications which scale to millions of players
  
• Troubleshoot, debug and solve challenging technical issues
  
• Support team development and guide junior team members

Tech Stack you will be working with:

• Languages: Javascript/Typescript, Go
  
• Frameworks & Libraries: ThreeJS, Mithril, Fastify, WebSockets, Chi, Node
  
• Databases & Services: MongoDB, Redis, NATS
  
• Devops: Docker, Kubernetes, Google Cloud, Agones
  
• Rendering: WebGL1&2 (and some Canvas and likely WebGPU in the future)

We are looking for someone with:

• A mix of deep web and game development expertise
  
• Senior-level experience with Typescript & Javascript
  
• Strong experience and proficiency with 3D game development and concepts, as well as graphics programming on the web using WebGL (and possibly WebGPU)
  
• Fearlessness towards new technologies, and willingness to get your hands dirty
  
• Full stack web experience; Experience with building web applications from concept to finished product
  
• Knowledge of backend concepts in multiplayer games such as real-time servers and architecture using WebSockets and WebTransport, as well as common game server paradigms such as authoritative logic
  
• Experience delivering production-ready, safe code and committed to quality and highly testable code - our games are played by millions of users daily across a wide range of devices and platforms
  
• Ability and habit to profile, analyse and troubleshoot issues in environment and application performance/design inefficiencies
